After replacing fan clutch (which I`m certain it was bad) we still have the whine from engine compartment . After using redneck stethescope and throttling it up and down ,it most definately sounds like the noise is from pump. Recently I put a new muffler on the truck and after quieting down the sraightpipe theres noise I previously could hear because of droned out. Question is how much whine a pump should be making . Starts like a top cold or hot, doesn`t sputter or miss or smoke. Should I be worried that the pump is on its way out or do they get noisey ? Or should it be fairly quiet?

You do not say what model truck you have but on my 02 the whine is gear noise from the front of the engine. Been there since new. That is one of the reasons why they went to timing belts in cars was because of gear & timing chain noise.

It is a gear driven high pressure pump. Noise is inherent in its operation.

The noise from the CP-3 is noticeable at an idle when the hood is open. Mine also noticeable going down the road and will change when a tune is changed in the ECU.

I am not sure it is possible to diagnose the noise as a problem. Can you do an audio track of what you hear at an idle and at road speed?

That might be the reason manufacturers publish for using timing belts, but the real reason is that they're cheaper on OHC engines. I've owned many engines with timing chains and gears and never heard any noise inside the vehicle. With the sound systems in some new cars, you probably couldn't hear the engine blow up.

The only engine I ever had where you could hear the timing gears (and everything else) was a 3-53 Detroit in an old IH pickup.

Sorry for delay ,had to split wood or freeze. Truck is a 2003 DRW 3500 Ram with 359K of well maintained work truck. Has stock feul pump set up.

At that mileage Pump needs to be Freshen Up,Its just Not worth the risk to run the bushings and seals past 300k without visually being inspected. The noise is just normal, But with hood closed and still possible to hear the whine it needs to be look into,, Are you sure its NOT belt related?

Yes it is not belt related. Sounds basically like a PS pump whining, not real pronounced but you hear it when leting off throttle on highway as it winds back down. But if we can pull it off of there and take it to Cummins for a small chunk of change and head off a major catastrophy then . . Frankly I am amazed at the service we have gotten out of this truck and plan on keeping it . Not the best mileage, not the worst. Could be a lot better.

Take a look at T&C website for pump repair.

ON another note , most small car gas engines that now have variable valve timing also have timing chains, no more belts.

Pump was good. . It was Mopar Reman. . NO signs of wear. . Shaft and bushings are good. . Its 1 of the better Mopar remans I've seen. It had signs of both eccentric seal wear ,but nothing unusual.

Still got more beef with T&C pump ,not sure why. Also it seems to be getting better milage . Could be mistaken but plowing for 8 hrs on a quarter tank aint bad,and that is precisely why I just had to have Cummins trucks for our work. Bed time for,now could feel bad for replacing a pump that was still up to the task but I look at it this way, itwouldn`t be the first wrong call I`ve made. What pisses me off more than anything is the truck popped out of Park while I was behind it this am and fn near ran over me. Now that blew me away. must have the linkage a bit off when I was under there bending the transthrottle bracket to get quicker shift up.
