We are down in Lake Havasu City, AZ for the winter. I have a 96 Ram 3500 with the 5. 9. I also have an external water leak from my head gasket. The fellow who is going to replace it, just notified me that he had checked with the local Dodge dealer and could not believe the price. I did check with Blumenthal's and their price was somewhat better. Any suggestions on where to buy a factory head gasket set at a fair price?

If you can, please find the Engine Serial Number for your engine and I will get you a Cummins Part Number. Will be cheaper and fairly easy to find.

Engine Serial Number is 8 numbers long, located on Data Plate Riveted to the engine front cover facing the drivers side battery.

Mike. :)

Only the head gasket

Part # 3283335 Should sell for app. $120. 00

Complete Head Set

Part # 4089649 Should sell for app. $220. 00

Complete Head Set will contain the small gaskets that are needed in addition to the head gasket.

The only thing to be aware of here are the valve seals. If you don't plan to touch them you are fine with this kit.

If your mechanic wants to change them then you will need new updated valve rotators to do that. Cummins has made that change from MY2003 back on 12 valve 5. 9's so that affects your engine.

If he wants to do the valve seals let me know and I will dig the bulletin out to see what the part number is for the new style rotators and provide it for you.

If you need any other numbers or pricing for reference, please let me know.

Mike:)

Subject

Upper Engine Gasket Kit Introduction

Original Topic Number: 05t2-15.

Contents

This Technical Service Bulletin introduces a new upper engine gasket kit, Part Number 4089649 , for B Series engines. The release of the new upper engine gasket kit, changes the type of valve stem seal used on B Series two valve diesel products from a ring and band design to an integral design. The new valve stem seals provide a more consistent location and eliminates the potential for the seal coming off the tower during operation. The old style gasket kit, Part Number 3804897, is obsolete. It is superseded by the new style gasket kit, Part Number 4089649 .

The valve spring retainers, Part Number 3957913, and the valve rotators, Part Number 3957914, must be replaced when new valve stem seals are installed on engines built prior to April, 2003. The valve stem seals included in the kit, Part Number 3957912, are not compatible with the old valve spring retainers or the old valve rotators prior to Part Numbers 3957913 and 3957914, respectively.

This is the first I've heard of this TSB, thanks for sharing.

As for the head gasket, the 3 times I've pulled a head I only ordered the head gasket itself, got by fine without ordering the whole kit.
