I am looking for options to lock my tailgate on my 05 3500. I currently have a hose clamp on the right side 1" +/- round hinge. I know about the optional lock from the dealer. Are there any after market locks that may be cheaper or are there any other ways of securing the tailgate. :)

I used a garage door bolt and a padlock (same key as the spare tire lock and some others). Lag-screwed the garage door bolt to the left-upper-inside-corner of the tailgate; drilled a hole the size of the bolt in the left side of the bed frame. Cheap, quick, effective; easy to access from outside the truck, when the rear lid of the shell is open.

There is a very long thread on this subject from about 20 months ago. Do a search on my name and you'll find it.

Bully makes a OE style replacement tailgate lock that looks exactly like factory except has a lock and key. Easy install and works as good as any lock is going to on a tailgate.

I chose the PowerLock solution, which wires into your power door locks. It was fairly easy to install, and I like it because I don't have to carry a separate key plus remember to use it.

I did the same on mine, and also tied the ReTrax cover into the same system with an electric lock. When I use the key fob to lock or unlock the doors, the cover, and tailgate also lock or unlock.

One note of caution: The electric tailgate lock, at best, will only keep honest people honest. The sliding pin it uses to lock the handle only covers one side of the handle mechanism and a determined thief could probably defeat it by "wrenching" on the handle.

Another installation note: You have to tie this system into the door lock wiring. Finding that wire, in the wire bundle under the drivers rocker panel, was a lot of fun... You also need to tie it into the rear door lock wire if you want it to operate in sync with your key fob. On the 2005, when you hit the unlock once, on the key fob, it unlocks only the drivers door. Hitting it again unlocks all doors. If you tie the gate lock into the front lock wire, it will unlock and lock anytime you use the key fob. Have fun... ;)

I too went with the powerlock tied into my door locks. I reprogrammed my door locks where they are all locked or unlocked with one push of the key fob. That way I know I am either locked everywhere, including the tailgate, or everything is open. One tip, I ran the wiring along the frame and up though the grommet for the e-brake cable under the drivers door. It is just in the right spot to get it into the cab and up to the wiring in the kick panel. Good luck
