Left the truck running today and closed the door. Gone less that 5 min. They locked and I was stuck out side. Had to call for help to get in. Is this normal? I guess I need a spare key. Wish they were not so big.

Spsre key

You get a locksmith to make you a spare key using an after market blank that does not have all the fancy plastic stuff. Take the flat key and grind the big end down till it is the same size as the pointy end. This long narrow key will fit in your wallet or card case and the ignition has two little tits you can use to turn it with.

Use a real locksmith and not the dufis at wally;s world. The flat keys can be hard to find and harder to cut right. It took me 3 trys to get it right.  ;)

Someone else posted this same thing awhile back. How long did you have to leave it idling before it happened?

I have the auto lock feature that locks the doors at 25 MPH turned off. I wonder if this is why it's never happened to me.

locked out

Yep! The same exact thing happened to me.

I now have a spare key in a small metal box taped underneath the front bumper, just in case. Fortunately, I wasn't far from home when it happened. I never leave the key in the ignition, just in case. My truck automatically locks itself all the time. Don't know what the cure is.

Be vigilant.

I happen to have several keys and the habit of "big boying" it.

I know that the doors won't lock manually if the engine is running.

Here is what I have done since my 1st diesel in '99. I keep all of my important keys on 1 ring, all of my spares and secondary keys on another ... ... . and carry the the remote in my front pocket. I never carry keys with me! I always think of the day that the battery goes dead in the remote and I am stuck, but so far it hasn't happened!!!

I got an alarm installed with the remote start feature. Hit the button and the truck starts by itself after a few second wait. Kinda neat if you're looking to warm the truck up or keep it cool on a hot day.

The other neat feature is, while the key is in the ignition and the truck is running, hit a button on the remote and the truck keeps running when you pull your keys out of the ignition. :D The truck will stay running until the timer times out (12 minutes for me) or until someone steps on the brake pedal. That's the safety feature. :)

What kind of remote starter did you get Kilby? How much? Will it work with stick shift? I just had an Avatar (something like that) put on my wife's Blazer. After three visits to Best Buy for their installation, it works good.

Guys, I had the same thing happen to me on my 01. There is a method to disable the auto locking feature (at least there is on my 01) The owner's manual tells you how to do it.

Happened to me the on the first morning I had my truck. At the boat ramp at 4:30 in the morning in January. Left the keys on the floor while putting the waders on and heard the lock solenoid clunk.

I have the sliding rear window and it's REALLY easy to slip a coat hanger type piece if wire through the window seal. Just put a 90 deg bend about 3/8 inch from the end, slip it through the seal and use it to pop the latch open.

Took 5 min from the time the doors locked until I was in. No damage to anything.

man thats nice to know... easy in and easy out with all your stuff or perhaps the rig itself.

I figure if someone really wants my stuff nothing is going to stop them.

I have security key (don't know if all trucks have that) so I'm not worried about the truck driving off.
