I am just starting to experience this in this 98 24v and would like to know what to check first. I have already checked the obvious, grounds, cables. Should I disassemble the alt. to check the brushes? This problem has gone from occasionally to just about all the time. Especially after it is fully warmed up. If I need to, where to buy noise filter kit?

Search "noise filter" and then purchase one. It is a well known problem and I had to sort out the problem on my 2000truck. Problem solved.

Its not the brushes that are the problem

If the Alternator is the issue it will usually be the diodes that creates the noise. Before you do anything,Check the sensor ground behind the starter.

follow and print these instructions: http://www.suncoastconverters.com/images/APPS ground rewire.pdf

I grounded my ground wire to the left side battery ground strap where it bolts to the radiator support. NO problems, smoooooth shifts, runs better than new, no more gear hunting, poor shifts, ANS NO MORE CONVERTER LOCK/UNLOCK PROBLEMS FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. It's cheap, easy, and perminent. They should have been wired this way at the factory.
