G-Tech pocket dyno is a solution to dyno disputes

Intersting article.

Hope to see you back in a Dodge diesel one day soon. I've got family down in your neck of the woods. Next time I'm down that way, maybe we can meet and "Talk Trucks".

EMD

You find EMDs frequently in the tow boat industry. A most excellent engine! I was on a boat that had two of them, not one problem in 26 months. The next boat had old Fairbanks/morse and broke darn near every trip.

Big Motor

I always wanted a truck with a CAT motor in it, 8100hp, I may have to upgrade the torque converter and get some heavier front shocks :D :D

I've got a million & a half miles on EMD & GE lococotives, Too bad EMD can't get it all together with that 6,000 hp H engine. GE dominates the market now,& rightfully so. Too bad Cat can't get a foothold, a few years back we had a re-engined EMD SD-45-2 with a 12 cyl 3612 Cat engine, it was a joy to listen too under load. 20 years ago, we had 4 EMD locomotives re-engined with 16 cyl 3600 hp Sulzers, but they didn't work out either.

We have piles of 3600 engines in our fleet, but they all burn Natural Gas. :( Some have over 45,000 hours on them with no major overhauls. Good engines.

Dennis, 2-3 years ago I was following the news of the 6000hp prime movers GE and EMD were bringing to market, but I have heard nothing for a long time. I know they both had their problems (EMDs breaking crankshafts, GE's German built units had vibration problems). Are the EMDs having problems still?

I sometimes wonder how many hours/miles some of the SD9s that run around the Pasco WA BNSF yard have. I looked up engine numbers on the 'net and they were built between Sept 1954 and late 1957. It did not mention any rebuilds but certainly the prime movers have been gone through at least once.

There is a 1950 vintage GP-10 that they run the wheels off of, good ol #1438. It was rebuilt in '76 I believe.

I think UP is the only one so far to order the EMD H engine, & they have all been through one modification after another trying to make them work mor reliably. I've only been around one of them, we had it on a train out of KC last year. No idea what it was doing on BNSF. It worked fine for the 6 hours I used it. I heard the old 2 cycle design they've used since the 40's will no longer be EPA certified, & they have to make this new 4 cycle work sooner or later. Haven't seen any of GE's new ones yet, I think CSX has a bunch of them alleady. I have no idea how many hours the old SD's have on them, but none of them have many original parts on them except most of the frame. On BNSF, I've punched around on some of the on board computers to get life time mileage totals on newer units, and they're getting about 130,000 a year on most of the road units. Most of the big class 1 roads are letting UP be the guinea pig for the H engines.

The tug "Diane Moran" in Savannah is a new Z-drive with twin EMDs posting 5100 combined HP. I spent an evening on it a few months back. Problem is the gray smoke it makes under acceleration and load. I can see why the EPD won't certify them. That's inherent in the 2 cycle design. They are extremely strong engines but smoke worse than the ships they are pushing and those ships are using heavy fuel (low speed diesels).

In our fleet we have around 100 3512 Cats know as Super Pumpers, they put out 2250 HP with 7 speed Allison's behind them. When they are in 7th gear at 2000 RPM (goverend speed) pumping at or above 5000 PSI with the twin 12in diameter turbos spooled up to max boost, that is one AWESOME sound:D Especially when you are standing in between 2 of them running wide open.

Not Blown Up ..... Or an IH Either ... ... ... But with 6300 BHP at 1000 rpm , a 265 mm bore; 300 mm stroke

16-cylinder, 4-cycle, GM16V265 H-Engine delivers. #ad
