Long start time on 04.5

So I take the 04. 5 back to the dealer last night because of a long start problem that had never been taken care of. When I called this afternoon they said that the truck started right up and they checked the heater on the intake and everything was OK. I was about to blow my stack because we had two cold days last week that I had to crank 4 times, and now on this 20 degree morning when the truck sat outside all night it decided to start. The service department must be using magic. Anyway when I found this out, I called the sales manager and complained. He called the service manager and asked him to explain what went on. Meanwhile the service manager decided to try and start my truck again. Guess what! After only sitting outside for 3 hours, he had to crank it multiple times to get it started. TOLD YOU SO!!! Now he calls me and says that he is stumped and will need to keep the truck for maybe a couple of more days.



Has anyone out there had a similar hard starting problem out of the 600 series?



I'd like to know about some of your experiences out there, so I can maybe "check their work"

Had problems last summer with my truck starting. It started out with every once in a while longer starting time and then not starting at all. Because this would come and go it took some time for the dealer to figure this out and a lot of phone calls to DC. I did find out that when it would not start that I could coast start it (standard transmission) and it would take right off and run great as long as it was running. Cummins had mechanic do some flow test and found out that 5 of the 6 injectors were bad. The injectors were bypassing to much fuel and pressure was to low for proper injection. When coast starting the motor turned over faster than with the starter making enough pressure to start. They replaced all of the injectors and it has run fine ever since

Still a problem with mine

I have an 03 and it has ALWAYS taking forever to start the truck when it's below freezing and not plugged in. Sometimes I will need to crank 3-5 times in 5-10 second intervals before the truck will take and fire. I've had it in last year (wintertime) and the dealer didn't find a problem. It's goin in again soon for some TSB's and the park recall, they'll be looking at this too.

The service manager did say that he would have to do some pressure checking from the tank all the way to the engine. He didn't give me a lot of details. Hopefully they'll knock it out this week.

Man, with all of these injector problems, it just makes me want to buy a new set and rule them out for any of the many problems they seem to have! Now, to win the lottery that I don't play, then we're set...

I'm with MWorce. You will find that you have a bad injector(s) most likely. Your truck requires around 1800psi of fuel pressure to start and it will not do so if there is an ijector leaking down. They will be able to monitor the rail pressure w/ the DRB. Then go through and start capping the injector lines at the rail 1 by 1 to see if the pressure rises and the engine starts. this will find your bad injector. This can be a pain because sometimes the engine will start halfway through testing and will not fail to start until the truck sits for an extended period, even with all of the lines reconnected. Good luck and hopefully you will have a good tech who has delt with this problem before. Because STAR is only going to want to give you the injectors that are bad and not a whole new set.

Got the call on Tuesday that DC said replace them all. I couldn't believe they're giving me all of them

wow. . so injectors is the hard starting culprit. I sure hope that is not my issue. Sure sounds exactly the same though. Anyone have thought on aftermarket injectors that are better built then the stocks? thanks!!g

Fuel filter restrictions would be my first starting point.

At 13K due to shipping delay`s, my truck started to have a hard start issue.

I replaced the fuel filter and it gradually started to get better.

After 2 day`s it came back to normal.

So help me out here.



I have a 98. 5 24V I have had since new. It has always started with first bump of the key.



I now have a 04. 5 and noticed it takes a few turns of the engine to start.



Is this because it has to build pressure in the rail?



Is it normal to take a few crank rotations to start?
