Well as expected I installed the LarryB contact kit and that didn't solve my problem. :{

I've tried priming the pump prior to start after the truck has sat for a couple of hours and that's not it either.

Is there anything else I can do short of getting ready to replace the fuel return hose?

I'm planning on getting the fuel screen kit from Cummins of Cumberland sometime so I can change that out. With nearly 154K miles I know that things gotta be dirty.

Pop the hood, turn it "On", then test BOTH cables where they bolt up to the grids. I had a dead relay for the last two years & blamed it everything else I could think of. I finally figured it out last week, & got another one from the Dodge dealer for $65. 00 but they had to order it. Starts like old times now. You can also check it on the engine side of each relay, on the driver's side fender well. "Check the easy stuff first. "

hey mark!! listen to dennis, this is what happened to me. the fellow i bought my truck from said it was hard starting. he said his farm tractors started easier, that was why he only owned it for about 6 mo. . one of my relays was not clicking under the test, so igot a new set of relays and then i went one step further and got a new intake sensor . it sits behind the intake horn. it is aheavier duty sensor than the original. the ole girl starts great now. this morning it was 15 below here in mn. good luck denny!

Hard start

You might check the setting on the shut-off lever, in the off position it contacts a adj. screw that is bolted to the side of the pump. I would remove the solenoid and operate the shut-off lever by hand and see if it is pulling to far back, this mybe causing the rack to stick in the off position. If the rack is sticking, it may take starter vibration for it to move. The lever should just move to the rear enough to shut the engine off, if it moves farther it could be sticking.

Hard Starting

Mine did the same thing, The Fuel Shutdown Solenoid wasn't lifting all the way up, it was the Relay. While your at it check for the backing plate on the Solenoid if it's pretty cracked up, you might as well replace it to.

Fuel Shutdown Solenoid is $238. @ Piers Diesel or you can go to the stealership, they wanted $478. Piers buys lots and sells substantially less, same part number and Cummins part.

It was the Fuel Shutdown Relay. $44. 00 from http:\\www.carparts.com verses the stealership's cost and it was the same exact part that Dodge used.

MY . 01 for you to ponder:cool:

K. she cranks for a couple of seconds then starts. The contacts did help a little, but its still not where it should be. Also, after this morning's weather being in the teens I had to go buy a replacement for one of my batteries. I know you should replace both at the same time, but I put a tester on it and it shows good so for now I'll save some $$.

With the addition of the contact kit and new battery it does a start a little easier now, but its still taking too long. I'm going to check the grid connections because sometimes my grid takes what I think is too long when it shouldn't.
