I drove to Alvarado,Tx from Corpus Christi,Tx on friday afternoon 5-Sept-08. I had SMARTY #9 with no REVO adjustments programmed. I went the back way up I-77, so there was a bunch of start and stop in small towns. I drove conservatively with a few exceptions to get around couple idiots. Truck ran great. This is a 7 hour trip.

Saturday morning 6-Sept-08 truck started fine but extremely rough idle. When I started rolling there was a terrible clattering sound and a tremendous amout of white smoke from the tailpipe. I stopped, turned off truck, scanned-no codes, set back to stock. I checked to see if oil was contaminated and it appeared normal-black. It was not milky, nor did it smell like fuel. Truck still idling rough, but driveable. A long-time friend in Alvarado,a good diesel mechanic, happened to be in town and I met him to see what could be problem. After truck warmed up would still produce white if pedal mashed.

The tube from the turbo to the intercooler appeared to be delaminating and had migrated about 1/8 inch, so we performed a "field-repair" with rtv and duck tape. I replaced air filter which was kinda nasty and 25k overdue-oops. Now truck will make a "chuff" of black when pedal mashed-it never did this before in stock form. On the return trip to Corpus truck ran great.

Questions---WTF happened? Is it ok to go back to SMARTY? I likey the acceleration and throttle response at high speeds. Should I replace the rubbers on the intercooler? I have heard timing issues can cause white smoke. Could there be too much timing in SMARTY #9? I have also heard of injectors going out in 03 and early 04 trucks such as mine. I still have 5k worth of warranty. Should I take truck to a reputable dealership?

Thanks in advance

Andy

White smoke can me a injector hanging or timing issue. Since your air filter was way over due can we assume that its been awhile since you replaced the fuel filter? If you are starving the fuel rail all sorts of symptoms can occur. I was always taught to start with the simple fixes first.

simple stuff

The AirDog has a two micron fuel filter and a water seperater. There is also an electronic indicator for reduced flow. There has been no indication of a reduction in the amount of fuel available to the cp3.

I have experienced this rough idle only one time before and it cleared up when the truck warmed up. I made a trip from the DFW area to the panhandle area that normally takes 7. 5 hours in 5 hours. On one of the backroads where there is no place for law enforcement to hide I cranked her up all the way, set the cruise, and left it there for around 3. 5 hours. It should be noted that I had replaced all filters and done an oil change about 200 miles prior to that trip. I did not have Airdog, or SMARTY at that time.

If there is a chance that I have an injector starting to fail does anyone think it would be wrong to take the truck in for service while I still have engine warranty?

SMARTY and TIMING

I guess what I am asking is Do ya'll think it will be safe to reload SMARTY #9 or should I take truck in to check injectors? I have not been able to slip clutch running empty with #9 programmed and I would like to reload it, but not at the expense of ruining my engine.

NOT HAPPY WITH SMARTY RIGHT NOW

Sorry to say, Smarty is not your problem. I assume you have about 95k on your truck since you stated that you have 5k worth of warantee left. Injector failures are normal in all of these trucks but the 03-04 trucks run abit differently than the 04. 5 and up trucks. , different ECM's.

Question: Does your truck run the same or experienece the same symptoms without the Smarty or only with?

If it smokes with or rattles without the smarty then you have a problem with the fuel system. Injectors being the first place I would look. SierraRam was inline with what he stated as I would have said the same.

Remember the Smarty or any other downloader for that reason re-write the ECM code. This will exploit any and all problems given the right circumstances as in your case. I would NOT re-load the Smarty and get that engine check-out first.

With or without Smarty

Richard,

My truck has only done this once before and it was after a long trip at WOT. Since returning to stock I have not noticed any more rattling, but I am getting a bit of black smoke when the pedal is mashed from idle-in neutral, and more than normal under hard acceleration.

Andy

PS Anybody suggest a reputable Dodge dealer in Corpus Christi?

Anyone have a dealer in D/FW that will do good work and not hassle you for intake, exhaust and additional gauges(commander)?
