I stand corrected. It is indeed Cummins. If I could post a picture, I could show that it is in fact the clasp band on a valve stem seal. Some on a used head I have are shiny and some are orange. How it found its way to the pan is anyones' guess. The seal may or may not be in place but it can be changed from the top side. Roll the appropriate piston to the top and unclasp the valve. I suppose it will be necessary to remove each of the valve covers to find the right one.

Yep, valve seal clip! You better find out where it came from, I saw one of these take out an engine! :{

The clip broke, migrated to the oil pan, and the oil pickup tube had a small hole worn in it this big O between the holes. The band sucked thru that hole and jammed the oil pump gears.

F. Y. I. - a 3. 9bta has more power than the woodruff key on the oil pump can take.

I had to change the bearings and the turbo, did I mention I just rebuilt this and it had 6 hours on it? :(

Your lucky you found it, with a good flashlight, you might be able to find which one it was. Good luck!

Perfect time to update to heavy valve springs and new valve steam seals. Not a difficult job.

I now know where I have seen a clip like that... go figure.
