HH/Greg the mountains haven't changed except in the mind of haze that we call memory. As for the pay part is a guy supposed to get paid for this? I missed the boat on that one. The only ones that can pay to go hunting are the same ones that have no appreciation for where they are.

BIL had a visitor drop by to check out his hunting operation because they are going next fall. The Dad was all into the game part of it and that's good. But the Mom/son/daughter were more into the mountains and the fishing and trees. The Dad got ****** at the boy because he was asking questions about the Mules. And not all that interested in the hunting. He made the comment that it was his dad's idea to hunt not his. BIL told the young man that I was the resident Mule Man and knows all about the different trees up here so if you have any questions ask him. The Dad asked who is he? BIL said he's my Head Wrangler. Dad said and he looks at Trees!!!!!!!! Made me want to wrangle his head off his shoulders DAMN PEOPLE ARE STUPID at times

Later I asked BIL about the HEAD WRANGLER moniker? What do you want to be call my MORON BIL that loves this stuff??????????????? YA YA I DO Oo.

HH

Your comment about running the vacuum I would do that and put on a maids outfit if the wife wants to muck out the barn NO PROBLEM. We made a deal long ago she takes care of the inside and I take care of the outside (I think I got the shaft on that deal) but most of the time we help both in and out of the house. Im no woman expert by no means but I have found that if a guy helps out in the house with the so called GIRL IE stuff that "PIECE" that we were talking about earlier comes a little bit easier and with a WHOLE LOT MORE INTREST :-laf

BIGNASTY,

Where about in Montana are you located? I lived in Missoula for a year when I was kid, otherwise have been a Kalifornia boy all my life. Gotta get out of this state.

BIG, yeah, my wife and I don't trade out willingly. We used to do it all together. We'd muck the stalls, then go clean the house. Build some fence, then come in and cook dinner. Ride horses, then go out to dance. YOu get the idea. Nowadays, she does the cooking, cleaning, and teaching the kids around the house, and I take care of the animals and shop. That's one reason I quit dayworking and starting pulling wrenches. I'd rather ride the horses, but the shop pays better and I can stay literally next door to her. Hopefully, these kids'll get a little older and we can all go riding and work on fence. Nothing keeps a kid out of trouble like driving T posts 6-8 hours a day 35 miles from the nearest town. :D

Now that sounds like a plan. A young Boy, Driving t-posts,:-laf 35 miles from the nearest computer game, along with sore hooves and wet saddle blankets. HHmmmmmm, now, THATS a good idea;)!

HHhuntitall, is the weather getting hot down there, yet? We still have snow in the yard and ice in the driveway. Supposed to get snow tomorrow night! GregH

boy you guys sure know how to make a young buck feel... . well, like a young buck. i do love the mountains and the high desert and well the great outdoors.

HH, somehow as much as you might gripe id be willing to bet you wouldnt trade it for the world.

That's how Dad felt. Now that I have a daughter, I'm thinkin' it's a good idea, too!! :D Internet is non-existant, and cell-phone reception depends on what hill your on!! Hooves don't get real sore in that country, as there's little rock. Mostly it's their knees and back from the up and down..... especially when you load 'em down with 100 t posts or a couple rolls of wire and tools. We all sleep good at night!!

Not hot, just right. Humidity sucks!! Been 90+% humidity for several days, and partly cloudy, down to @ 50 at night and up to 70-80 during the day. Had to pick up some bloat mineral for some heifers I have on wheat... . Also had a constant South gale for 4 days straight 10-30mph. Guess I should be used to it. All the trees on this hill grow at about a 10-15* angle to the North. :-laf The wheat in Denton Co. is all flagging, getting ready to start making heads. Hopefully we've had the last freeze!! I started working on combines this week..... yea ... . #@$%! Finished up most of my shop jobs, only have an engine rebuild after I get this stupid Jeep out of here... ...

Nawww, the world's been trashed in too many places. I'll just take my clean little corner. :D I only gripe about the sore back and the trash blowing over the fence..... And for your information, it's more like a whine!!! :D

HHhuntitall, Its 54 degrees and 15% humidity, as I type this. I grew up in hot humid country, but I cant stand that humidity any more. Dry heat and cold is far easier on the metabolism:-laf! 'Course, if you want really dry? The difference between your part of the Country and mine is similar to the difference between Colorado High Country and the Nevada Desert. Now , Thats D R Y !!!!!

I worked there on a job, July-September, 2002. The steel was so hot by 2PM that the soles of yer boots would leave smears on the plates! Hands and knees work? Not without an insulated kneeling pad and welding gloves! Bare hands on that hot steel would be like placing your hand on the bottom of a hot frying pan! GregH

GHarm, you bet! That SOP here in the summer. You stand your big wrenches up against the machine when you're working, and your smaller handwrenches go in the shade of the tool box or machine, or you can't pick 'em up after 10 minutes without gloves, and even then it's hard. We had over 100 days here last year where the high was over 100*F. In places where it burned this summer, by 11am the temp was 120+* out in the burn. That black charcoaled ground made it unbearable real quick..... I got in my truck to go in for lunch, and it was 126* one day, and as soon as I drove out of the burn it fell to 98*. It got to 106 that day, so I'm sure the burn area was hotter!!

Here's a pic of me and one of Dad's ponies gettin' a drink..... I was sure glad to see the truck, as I would have been drinkin' out of the trough!! It was hot that day!! We've got a little up and down country, ourselves... ... in places, you won't be 100yds from some cows, but have to ride 4 miles to get across the canyon/wash between you to get to them.....

Beautiful Country! OUTSTANDING Picture, HH! Is that Pinion Pine or Mesquite? I've only been to the Dallas/FW airport, just passin through. Really havent seen any Texas Country, 'cept in pictures like yours. Another TDR member posted a pictures of West Texas mountains. They were Outstanding, also!
Just got finished breakin up a 8" thick ridge of ice in front of the garage! Have issues with ice damming in the gutters on that side. It took 2 months for that to clear. It melts, drips and freezes right in front of the garage door! Grrrrrr GregH

Ugh!! Ice sucks, period!! I had to cut it with a chainsaw one year, here in Denton, Co. so the cows could get water. That was the worst winter I remember. I spent every morning going around checking on newborns, making sure they weren't frozen..... I've seen your garage, though..... You're not trying to get in there are you? :-laf

That country in that pic is my HQ ranch in Western Texas, North of Snyder. That's the foot hills of Cooper Montain in the background. It burned right up to the road behind the camera last year. We were lookin' for burned cattle and pushing the others we found out to work and move to other pasture. We shipped @ 100 head of cows the next day. It still hasn't recovered. It didn't rain for another 8 months, and even then, it was too cold to grow anything. Now, we've had a little rain, but not enough to really make the grass grow.....

Hey, you ever though of redirecting that gutter? Make it exit off the East corner? Or go on around the corner over your other porch?

OH, that's Cedar, I'm not sure of the variety, AND mesquite. Most of it's just Red Cedar, but there are a few Junipers... ... I'm not sure they take to the heat very well. You can tell it's been dry as hell around there. Normally, that grass would be knee tall, but not in the last 6-7yrs...

HH, Wont get into the garage, any time soon:D. The Shop is the important one! You havent seen that, yet! Its not quite as bad:--)!

However, I wanted to clear the area so we can get Mom out to the car on solid ground;)! Church, tomorrowOo. !

As far as gutters, I need to run the electric cable in them that is specifically made to prevent ice damming. I failed to get it done this last Summer. This Year, we had an early wet dump of snow(1st week of February at 40") that created the worst ice damming I have seen since we've lived in this house (13 years).

That heating cable will take it off. Just leave an ice skating rink, East of the deck, in the yard. Better than one in the walking area:-laf. Slipped and did a Football shoulder block on the concrete deck, last Sunday! Dang, That was my good shootin' shoulder#@$%!! Thankfully it warmed up, this week and the ice went from clear to milky colored. I knew that I could attack it with payback, in mind;)

There are places in Colorado that look similar to your HQ Ranch. I'm sure you've seen many of them.

GregH

More lookin around

Top of the World in my area of the Country. About 15 Miles west of the house!
Looking North by Northwest. from an elevation of 11,000' plus. Ridge on the skyline is the Continental Divide at 12,000' plus or minus. The peak in the distance is South Arapahoe peak at 13,397'.
My BIL checking out Monarch basin, below us in the canyon. Looking for Elk in October, 2008. GregH

Theres trails all over, up there, because of all the mining claims! Lots of hikers and 4X4 enthusiasts around in the Summer. Not as secluded as your homestead!

Yep! I did notice HH sittin' on that "short eared critter":-laf.

GregH
