Sounds similiar to my Uniden PC78LTW. I used this reasonably priced radio along with a Wilson 2000 antennae for 14 months with no problems. Since I was slip seating, I pulled the radio everyday out of a single axle ragwagon which about beat me to death but that's another story. Background noise was minimal which is a biggie for me. Weather channel volume and clearity about blew me out of the seat when I first tested it. I was used to those cheapie radio alerts. I bought it local for about 120 where by I think you could find it cheaper online. But the guy peaked it for me and will check the output for free on occasion. So, yeah, I like mine.

Would you even consider a little hand held unit say like from radio shack? I am thinking about getting one. - Dean

I use a handheld unit and a mag mount antenae for non-permanent applications (driving a vehicle for someone, etc) I use a midland handheld that has a channel scan feature that is nice. If you only want to receive and aren't worried too much about the audio quality (can be very hard to hear with all the noise around you) than they work, if you want to be able to talk back, dont bother... you would either have to use one that had the ability (and be able to actually locate and purchase) an external mic, or you could just hoist the handheld up, along with the power wire (unless you want to keep duracell in business on your own) and antennae coax cable to your head when you want to talk...
