Anyone else have the flu?

First time I've posted here, but I'm looking for a Colt series 70 1911 government model, 45 ACP, SS, for my wife's birthday. I thought I had a S&W 357 magnum model 66-2 SS, even had it paid for and was found to be a 38 special when I arrived at the gun shop to fill out paperwork, that I bought without looking at it first. It was a good thing though, because when I had to call the wife to see if she would except that caliber, (she did say as I was leaving for a gun show, "pick me up a 357 mag"), she exclaimed, "I wanted an auto". She doesn't know you can't get a 357 Magnum Semi auto pistol. So after looking for the appropriate semi auto, I have chosen the Colt 1911.

Wellll, technically, you can get the . 357 Magnum semi-auto from IWI Magnum Research in their Desert Eagle..... Don't think that'd be very practical for her, though... . Things are way to heavy... . As for the Colt, I'm gonna have to wish you good luck... . Try Gunbroker.com or auctionarms.com. Might actually stumble across one at a show somewhere... . They are going for good money right now. I wish I had a 1,000 of 'em to sell!! Last year, I could pick up a decent one for around $600, but now that's doubled or more.

Coonan makes a 357 mag in the 1911 platform.

Ya, I know its going to be hard to get, and have seen them at $1000. 00+ used. But if your patient you can get them new from Colt, its just a wait to get them. I know a couple of gun shops that gets them allocated from Colt but I have to be a pain in the *** so the dealer will remember me when he gets one so I'll stop bugging him. :-laf

Thats a good choice I love my Combat Commander its been a great pistol. Have you looked at the Defender at all? Its quite a bit smaller than the 70. It will be my next purchase and will probably use it for CC

If the gun shop tells me has one, but in a blued finish, I just might buy that one, but thats the model I'm going to buy. There are other cheap competitors out there, but it will be passed down through the family. Like the 1905 New navy Colt 38 revolver that I have from my Grand father when he passed. It is in fireable condition and worth more than the 1911 I want.

The defender is a Colt and comes in 9mm and. 45, blued or ss. It is much smaller and designed for conceal carry I just thought I would throw it out there when you said you were looking for your wife. I dont blame you for sticking to what you want, Im the same way :)

Maybe she knows about the Sig-Sauer P239- you might want to look into it. Unless she is EXTREMELY experienced with 1911-style pistols, they are not for her.

She's got a 25 cal Barrette she can carry in her purse. But she's looking for firepower now. I'm sure she'll feel the power and look at me with surprise then start laughing.

im hoping a LAR grizzly in 45 win mag shows up so I can impulse buy it. I second the good luck sentiment and suggest you widen your options.

Has she ever shot a . 45? I made my wife shoot mine as it is the primary pistol I like to keep "handy". It shocked the hell out of her when it went off and she nearly dropped it. Forseeing this, I only had one rd in the clip. Her surprise turned to anger when she turned around to see me snickering. Shes a good sport she got over it pretty quickly

Well she shot my AR, Mossberg Shot gun, the colt navy 38 and her barrette, so I'm confident that she will be OK, but thanks for the warning. I will make sure to warn her before firing and I like the idea of one round, thanks diesel4life.

Just my take, but a . 45 ain't a mule kick. It is a good shove. Now, if she were thinking of a sub compact . 40 cal with cartridges north of 1300, I might be offering advice to reconsider. I know this because my wife has shot a lot too, yet my g23 with the good stuff, has bit too much snap as she cannot manage it for a follow up shot without resetting the gun in the web of her hand.

Don't settle, you will find what you are looking for.

No its not a mule actually I think my Commander is very well balanced with minimal recoil for a larger caliber pistol. But for someone who had never shot anything bigger than a 9mm (and weighs 100 pounds soaking wet) it was more than she was expecting. She has since shot it a few more times and handles it OK but not great. She came from a no gun family so it was all new to her when we got together.

Just trying to keep it objective Diesel. People will propogate myth's as long as they are allowed. Not saying you were doing that, yet a reader may read your post and continue on and influence others along the way when in actuality, as you know, they are not the beasts they can be portrayed as.

In the end, I am all about shot placement. Just bought my wife a 9mm as she cannot comfortably take successive shots with my g23. You can have the biggest hog slayer on your hip, yet if you don't know where the bullet is going prior to pulling the trigger, it is all luck there after. And luck, as we all know, runs out...

Yeah, my wife has no problems whatsoever with a . 45. She's shot a Sig 220, many 1911s, and even my old Smith&Wesson revolver in . 45Acp... ... She shoots them all pretty well, but she prefers the fit and feel of something a little smaller, and went with the 9mm in Baby Eagle. Nothing wrong with it, and she's gonna aim for your manhood, so I'm torn as to wiether or not she really needs a bigger round..... With 115gr Hydrashocks, not much is gonna run roughshod over her. :D She's got several coyotes, a cow, and some snakes with it so far, so I wouldn't want her shooting at me with it!!

a 45 aint bad unless you convince yourself it does. on a totally unrelated note, I found non-backordered fed 215m primers by the thousand on Sinclair if anyone is looking.

Thanks for all of your responses, but the irony is our desktop took a crap this last weekend, and she ended up with a laptop for her birthday. But don't worry it is still on my want list and may get it for my birthday. I bet she will love to fire it once I get it, I'm now hoping I can find a new one, now that I have lots of time to wait for it. Back to the desktop, I couldn't convince her to buy an Apple. I'm tired of replacing Microsoft computers every two years. I went to Apple and bought a Desktop Pro for a ridiculous amount of money to support my iPhone and didn't want another POS that would last only one year like our first top of the line HP laptop. The Colt 45 ACP will be a great addition to my Colt collection.
