Hey guys,..... I'm looking for a good quality radio/cd type unit to replace the stock AM/FM/Cassette in the 93.

My only issues are that the overall size of the dash faceplate/opening for the stocker is pretty large and I want something that will look like as though it's a "designed for" replacement.

Many of the one's out there are pretty mickey mouse and don't seem to go well with the dash mounting location.

Do any of you have some recommendations??? I'm not looking for a million watt system but a good solid/reliable unit that will take the bouncing and beating that a 4X4 will put it thru.

Have you any pictures??? Model/maker etc????

pastor bob... .

I currently have a Sony in mine. I used a mounting kit that took up the huge hole and mounted to the stock screw holes. Works good, just doesn't look stock. I have the infinity head unit and speakers out of my buddies old 01 that I'm gonna install one of these days. If you want reliable, find a later model factory radio with CD, it will plug right in.

OK this is like asking what Oil do you use or what is your favorite Pizza - BUT

having spent a considerable amount of time trying to get a great radio that didn't have all the BS - I was sent to ECLIPSE by many folks... .

Here's their site:

I have the CD3424 - http://www.eclipse-web.com/index_cd.html

It Is Fantastic and the best you can buy..... It has MP3 that I have copied over 50 songs on my CD... ... Not a removeable face - stay away from that feature --

Hey my ears aren't as good as before - I was looking for something that has Rotary Dials - these do - I mean you can scroll up and down the stations and volumn - most have a goofy thing that is very hard to use at night or unless you're really looking at the darn thing.

Bob, if you can get a cd player from at least a 98 Ram or Van it will fit perfectly and work fine. I have a cd player from a 98 Dodge van in my 91, same bolt pattern/size etc. My 89 has an aftermarket cd player, I used a install kit, worked out good. Level of difficulty is minimal. I imagine you could use a cd player from something way up to 02. . ???

I won't advise on what radio to buy, but I will say that I have one mounted in an adapter plate I got from Crutchfield and it looks really nice.

I also bought their wiring harness adapter.

Both items came to $20 2 years ago. It was perhaps the best $20 I've spent.

The directions were perfect for the wiring and the adapter plate makes the whole thing look stock.

Hope this helps.

Hammersley, how much did that head unit cost you. I am interested in it, but I looked all over the eclipse site, and couldn't find prices anywhere. If you could give me a roundabout figure, it would save me a lot of hassle of calling the dealer locator number, then calling a local dealer and whatnot... thanks.

I use a simple $139 Alpine head unit with a rotary control. CD hasn't skipped at all since installed, and the kit from Crutchfield worked great, and looks okay also. Easier to hook up an amp or ?? also with the pre-outs. I had a factory deck from an '02, but the dash light color didn't match and to hook up a self amplified bass tube, I had to use speaker connectors which didn't sound very good. JMHO.

As good a time as any for a first post and i've been dying to use this smiley :-laf . I was in the same boat as you, wanting a cd player. Like has been mentioned above... . find a later model factory radio w/cd player and it'll just plug right in. I think the one i found was out of a 97 Wrangler, even had the 5-band equalizer. Got it from a guy that was upgrading, he gave me the thing.

I am selling my 98 XJ with a cd/cassete inifinity unit in it. Have really been thinking of swapping with my CTD before I do.

If I had a good stock cassete to throw in there I would. The stocker in my 93 does not work very well. Would probably be worth it to get a cheap deck at walmart to put in the jeep.

How much do yards usually get for the stock CD units?

Personally, I like aftermarket stereos - they offer more options and are usually better quality than stock options (unless you get into the really high dollar factory stuff).

I have a fairly inexpensive Kenwood CD player in mine, and with Pioneer 6x9s in the door and behind the seat it sounds very good. :) I have less than $300 in everything, including the boxes for the rear speakers. If done right, an aftermarket stereo will look very good in the dash, too.

Pioneer makes DIN+1/2 stereos that fit the larger Chrysler opening, but they're more expensive. I've also had a bad experience with Pioneer's quality and customer service and won't buy another. This is the second Kenwood I've owned, and had a couple Sonys that were good, too.

Here is a pic of mine:

go to www.Crutchfield.com and requst a catalog---its free and if you purchase a head unit from them they'll give you all the stuff you'll need for install. and if you have any problems they have a tech you can call for advice for free also... A very reliable company to work with...

I have a clarion pro audio unit its been in three of my vehicals and it never misses a beat plus there all eguipt with a magna tuner for radio signal and its great only rivialed but the OLD SCHOOL ---SUPER TUNNER 3 from pioneer.

the clarion is a good all around player

PB,

I would NOT recommend a Blaupunkt with a removable faceplate. I run a lot of secondary roads that are in not such good shape. My 90 rattled the heck out of that thing and after a while, the contacts from the faceplate to the base were not so tight. CD's would skip, radio would cut in and out. I'd pry the little contacts out every now and then, but overall a losing proposition.

I had the radio go out on my 93 last year. Got a stock radio/cassette off EBay for $35 plus about $10 for shipping. It's all I need, as I don't listen to music much anymore. If you're going aftermarket, try Crutchfield. They will supply a wiring harness for any radio to match any vehicle. Good service department also.

Stay AWAY from the Pioneer! #@$%!

I had Sony for years! 3 or 4 different head units..... never had a problem setting them up! Bought a Pioneer P (or D?)-3600 for my current truck just a few months ago after I aquired it and it was teh biggest stereo mistake I ever made. It has so many different equalizer settings that I still can't figure the dang thing out!! #@$%!

I think you should look in the Crutchfield catalog myself. I have bought from them several times and have been well pleased with the products, service, ETC. Their catalog also has a chart that tells you what radios, speakers, ETC. , will fit what vehicles. They always had prompt service and if you run into difficulties their tech line is just a phone call away.

Ecllipse. . I just got what I think is a killer deal off of eBay. . it;s a CD8445, lots of features and 8v preamp so I should get some decent sound out of it. Look it up and let me know your opinion... please!
