Looking for a gun safe...

Long overdue, don't care whos name is on it,meaning, I don't want to pay Browning $500 extra to advertise for them, need one to hold about 20-30 rifles, shotguns.



Fireproof is main concern.

Has to be some off the mainstream ads, that are reasonable.

Any suggestions?

Liberty makes a darn nice safe, and it is a little cheaper than the Browning et al. Check them out, I have not seen a better safe for less money.

Gene, I've been looking at purchasing a safe for a long, long time. After careful scrutinization, I've decided on a Fort Knox safe. I think the quality is superior to Liberty although the extra cost is something you have to decide for yourself.

Mine is 66x36x26", I got the one that's built just as good as the more expensive ones, but the lower line on the paint. It has a speckled gray paint job. I'm not putting it in the living room. :-laf I didnt see it on their site, maybe it's discontinued. I got it about 5 years ago. Get one bigger than you need... . you can fill it up that way. :-laf

Mine is fireproof. It's just under 1000 lbs. The tailgate will hold it.

I prefer the S&G lock.

I will add another recommendation for Liberty safes, when I bought mine I compared them all exhaustively and it was the best dollar/volume deal I could get here in the Metroplex.



The Granite safes that were made in Fort Worth are a lower-cost, no-nonsense safe with plain finishes and no frills. Might be worth a look.



Helpful notes:



- The S&G lock with jeweler's key is a very useful item. Don't have to do the full spin dial routine when getting in and out of it multiple times for cleaning etc.



- Figure out what size you will need, and then get the next biggest one. You'll fill it up fast.



- Number of door bolts and internal vs. external hinges are just marketing gimmicks. Thieves won't go through the door, it's the thickest part of the safe. They will either hack the thin sides open with an axe (easier than you'd think) or peel the top with a chisel. Liberty and the others who have a formed top are resistant to this type of attack.



- Good idea to have a heater inside (goldenrod or a light bulb) to avoid humidity problems if you put it in garage or basement.



- Also good idea to buy a bunch of those cheap $3-$4 flannel "gun socks" for your weapons, as it is tough to move 'em in and out without banging them into each other.

Any quality fire proof safe should be sufficent. I must second the opinion that you figure out what size you need and then buy the next size bigger, you will always find more things to put in there. The wifes' jewlery? This can help to justify a bigger safe. So can insurance papers, IRS papers and such.



When I bought my Natioal Security safe about 9 years ago, I was told that If I store my IRS and insurance papers in there (and that the safe is 'certified' as fire proof/resistant) that I could write it off as a tax deduction, as a document safe. My tax guy agreed and so I had a nice tax deduction for a document safe, that happens to be large enough to hold my guns.

P. S. check delivery charges, and where it is delivered to. Some sales people say delivery is to the driveway, some will put it into the garage, and yet others will put it in the house for you. The delivery costs can be huge so ask questions.

I drove it home myself. Put some extra cardboard under it.

I pushed it onto the tailgate myself also. Put your back against the front of the bed and push it with your feet. If the cardboard aint wet, should be able to move 1000 lbs no problem.

My 67 yr old Dad and I put it in the garage from the back of the CTD. He mostly just told me how close I was to the edge, and the floor. I had to drop it about 3". No damage, it was screwed to a pallet. Oh yea, the tailgate will support 1000 lbs teetering on the edge.

I had to get some help to put it in my den. Dad, my brother, and a U-haul wheel cart took care of that.

Again, Dad was more of a supervisor. The eyes for this operation.

We wheeled it out the back garage door onto the deck. From there, we wheeled it into the living room through the sliding door.

Then we went as far as we could down the hallway with the wheel cart then went to 1. 5" round pieces of wood. Simple and easy since my house is a ranch type with hardwood floors.

I wouldnt have done this if the place I bought it from would have delivered it. Turns out it was a lot easier than I thought.

I WOULD NOT do this myself if there was a lot of steps involved, or it was going into a basement.

Check some drayage companies...

If you live close to a major city, check out salvage and/or drayage companies--- few years back a friend took me to one in Northern California, and the used safes they had there were of all sizes, shapes, ages, and descriptions... ..... and believe me, one of these fancy safes with fancy paint jobs will cost you alot more than the same thing that used to sit in a bank or office somewhere. I was shocked at the price differences. I also was intrigued by the vault doors/frames that were sitting around..... but, unfortunately, had already built my house otherwise I'd have a "room" with vault door on it... ... ... .

Latest Costco coupon book has SENTRY gun safes for $150 off beginning 3/6/02... . apparently an 8 gun safe with shelves in it. Have to order over the net to get the discount... ... ... looks to be about $499. 99 after the discount.

Gene, I have a friend that owns Security Safe Outlet in Lexington, KY. Might be able to get you a good deal. Snarf a copy of The Shotgun News and check it out, usually good prices in there on safes. The Gun List is another rag that has individual ads, private owners selling new & used, as well as gun shops & dealers... My own 12-gun safe is a Liberty, real nice, paid $800 for it five years ago, new.

Well...I gone and done it!

I just purchased (and had installed... although I was part of the "crew") a Fort Knox Titan model gun safe (7241). This is next to their best model (one below the Yeager series). Weighing in at a stout 1,800 friggin pounds, standing 41" wide and 6' tall, it was no easy task for the two-man crew of Western Safe to deliever and "set-up" that heavy-weight! In fact, I became part of the moving crew!



Talk about awesome quality! And as anyone who knows me can attest, I'm extremely hard to please!

Well Gene I know you don't like us ford guys posting here, but my vote goes to Visalia safes. They are the biggest baddest and my concern they had the higest fire rating of them all! Shipping to back east to you might be a concern though.

my Fort Knox Titan safe has at a minimum, double wall protection (like a safe within a safe) plus industry standard fire retarding insulation to give it a 1690 degree F. fire protection rating for a 50 minute duration... an industry best!



You get what you pay for when it comes to a lot of things... especially safes.
