Looking for a rebuildable factory starter for a 2001 Cummins. I assume any Cummins starter for a 24 valve would work.
Thanks,
Jim

Many thanks, Bob. I bought one! I've been trying the Autozone starters (lifetime warranty) and have replaced one in a month, and now the other is acting up (2 months). I spend a lot of time out in the boonies,
and can't have a starter go bad, stranding me. Decided I wanted something of better quality. Generally Denso stuff is pretty good. I appreciate the link.

Most, if not all, of the aftermarket starters are made in China. I've got one on the truck now. it's lifetime warranteed from Auto Zone. The first one of theirs I installed had problems right from the start
(no pun intended). The second works fine unless the truck is out in single digit temps all night....then the solenoid hangs up. I spend a large amount of time out in the sticks, and don't want to have to worry
about it, so would rather just rebuild one of the factory Denso starters for it. My original lasted about 200,000 miles, and the after rebuilding it I got another 87,000 out of it. That would be 10 years of use at
the current rate of use I'm putting on the truck. if I can't find a good deal on a new Denso, I'd rather rebuild an older one. If not, I'll just keep using my lifetime-warranted Auto Zone.

You might try member mwilson for a lead I know he is a big truck parts guy but he may have some ideas on where. Also Foster Truck http://www.fostertruck.com/ does sell new ones they arent all that cheap but they are new and he sells parts to complete rebuild kits you may be able to take the crappy one you have and rebuild it with good parts not sure if that is possible. Also have you tried your area salvage yards for one

Have heard some good things about Power Master starters, not the cheapest but I don't want a cheap starter on my truck.priced one from summit racing for 245.00

Thanks, Barry, I'll look into those suggestions. I haven't checked locally, as we're still a-- deep in snow around here. If I try to rebuild the AutoZone starter it voids my lifetime warranty.....don't want to do that yet...LOL

Thanks, but I was aware of that. The cheapest I found was $375. Mostly they sell for about $450--$470 + shipping. If I can find an old one, I can rebuild it for $50.00
