I have been searching for an insertable locker or limited slip unit for a Dana 80 for an 02 that I am swapping in to replace my D70. It has 3. 54 gears But I am having trouble finding anything for the D80. I would like an insertable so I don't have to swap out the entire carrier. I do have a complete ring and pinion carrier set that is 4. 10 limited slip that I can swap an aftermarket 3. 54 gear set to if I can't find one. Does anyone know if or who makes anything for the D80. I would rather not go with a locker I am partial to LS type units. I am looking at going the economy route.

Unfortunately, the link posted above smells like a locker.

I'm also not aware of any lunch box limited slips, either, for any axle.

Tell power trax what your wanting to do with it and they will say that their unit is not up to task of 1000 ft lbs of torque. Also I don't think the 4. 10 unit will work on the 3. 54 gear. The split on the 80 is 3. 73. You can get a 3. 73 thin gear to work on the 4. 10 carrier. I don't think a 3. 54 thick gear is available and I don't think a ring gear spacer will allow the ring gear to center correctly. Get an ARB for the rear. I think detroit has a soft locker available. Lots of people have issues with the spider gears in the 80. I broke mine the first hook on the second Dana 80 I had in it.

Powertrax does make units that fit the dana 80 for both 35 and 37 spline axles with 3. 55 gearing. I had one in my truck for a while but I took it out. It really is a locker. It was in there for 25k and there is no noticeable wear on it at all so it seemed to hold up pretty well. For someone who wants a locker and is not going to badly abuse it, the powertrax would be great because of the low cost and ease of installation.

One note to make about the installation of the powertrax is that the ring gear on the D80 is thick enough that you have to remove it to install the powertrax. This really is not a big deal but it does involve taking the carrier out of the truck. With no air tools, the installation was 90 minutes or so.

Billvo, I am sending you a pm.

I got mine from drivetrain.com. I have to admit that their initial service was good but in the end, they were very unsatisfactory to deal with. To make sure that you get the right one, you need to supply the person selling the differential with the code on the tag that goes between 2 of the bolts back there. Which one of your trucks would this be for and does it have the D70, D80 or AAM axle?

I think I am going to have a 3. 54 rg&p with 73k on them. I just had mine changed to the 4. 10 with the 3. 54 carrier (ie thick rg).

I kind of like the idea of the power trax no slip traction system it looks a little less aggressive than the power lock as far as town driving. Also more money though.

BILLVO if your going to truck pull with it I would think twice. I just don't want people to spend half the money, then break it, then have to spend half again. So in the end you end up spending more than if you would have bought the right in the beginning. Also it depeds on HP level. Under 500 the Pwrtrax might be ok, but you get over that, and start to approach the 600 mark axles will be the next spot/ and or drive shaft. I tried to upgrade my stuff before I broke it. Example I pulled my DLD case for a DHD before I even hooked it. Paid 600 for the DHD, sold the DLD a year later for $600. If I would have trashed my DLD, I would have been out probably 600. Pulled the D70, sold if for $350.

are you talking about the tcase Mine has a DHD from factory. As far as fixin before it breaks thats what I'm trying to keep up on also that part of the reason for this thread and the D80 being staged to go in also going with 1480 yoke and joint in the business end of the driveshaft while its being shortened to work with the 80. Does ARB make a locker that isn't air or electric I fixed to many with bad seal rings in the past due to high milage. I want to stick with more of a limited slip type rather than a locker type diff. I am thinking of trading my factory LS 4. 10 carrier for a 3. 54 LS carrier. someone want to trade?Another idea is to switch to 4. 10 and go to 285 tire size what are your thoughts on this?

A powertrax is a real locker rather than a limited slip. In my experience, it is not quite as agressive as a detroit locker but when it is locked, both rear wheels turn together and it does not easily unlock. If this is going to be a street vehicle, it means that you either need to start every turn without power on so that the locker can unlock one side of it or you need to get used to increased tire wear and lots of extra load on the parts in your rear end.

If you want something that doesn't have the unpleasant parts of the locker, then your options are either a LS, or air or electric actuated locker. Some people have played around with taking a LS and tightening the clutches in it but this will reduce their life.

Regarding the rear end ratio and tire size, I would stick with smaller tires and a 3. 54 rear unless you go offroad. Large tires are for people who want the looks or spend a lot of time offroad. The increased weight and diameter of the tire mean that it takes a lot more energy to change the rotation speed of the tire. This means that your truck has less usable power(I am assuming that the two combinations compared have the exact same final drive ratio which is not true), and it gets worse fuel economy. In my opinion, the 285's ride much worse as well. I have never purchased a set but I would imagine that they are more expensive too.

I have ran 285 on several other vehicles in the past and had excellent luck with them I have 265 now that came factory its just 1 size up. I use my pickup for everything from grocery getter to competition it spends a lot of its days off road generally with a trailers on back moving cattle or haulin hay off the fields or just hunting and playing. The LS in my 70 is tightened up now to where it acts like a locker it snaps and pops in corners all day long even off road or on gravel ect. worse if applying power in turns.

Has anyone heard of using a D70 carrier in a D80? I've heard that you can drill out the holes on a 70 from the 1/2 to 9/16 to accept the D80 ring gear the carriers are the same other than that. Is there any truth to that?I have both here I should lay them beside each other and see.

From your description of your use, you sound like you could actually justify using 285's and 4. 10's. I have never heard of anyone getting a LS tightened up enough to make it snap and pop around turns before. I guess the advantage of a locker is that if you drive smart, you can get it to unlock in turns on the pavement unlike the LS but also giving you the same or slightly more traction when you need it.

BILLVO I wasn't saying you were doing it wrong, just illustrating a real $$ example. I know that the ARB and detroit units that go in the the Dodge 80's are D70HD units redrilled as you said. I suppose you could go with a D70 carrier, ARB told me an RD53 for a 4. 88 gear in the D80. You need to make sure that the unit can be set up correctly. I talked to people about a powertrax/locright and all of the people I talked to said that they didn't feel it was heavy enough for HP/TQ I was sending out. Would be great for a stock application. I feel the spider gears on the D80 carriers are hit and miss. I broke mine the first pull. I do know of an 00, and and 01 with probably over 100 hooks combined and they have had zero issues. So it could vary on what batch of spiders you got. Verify that you have the one piece tail housing on your transfer case. Some of them were labeled DHD and have the PTO cover, but have a two piece tail housing and they are not the big DHD. I didn't believe it when someone told me, and then they showed me one. Detroit or ARB in my book. I don't know if ox has one for the 80 or not.

Decision Made. :D I am going to try and swap my D70 Eaton LS unit into the D80 and see how that will go,but I will do a lot of side by side comparisons of the carriers to make sure they are same dimensions.

One last question is are the axles the same from a 70 and 80?I have both laying here just haven't pulled them to compare yet.

Thanks for all the input guys :)

Bill

I would be interested to hear whether the swap is possible once you try it. I have no experience with the D70 rear, only with the D80.

Good luck.
