I am looking for an article that was reprinted about taxation on Hi-bred cars, because they get such great mileage that the states are going to loose TAX money for building/maintenance of roads. So the states was looking at charging a tax that was based on there M P G. The cars would "talk to the gas pump" and thus the tax would be determined. California and Oregon was the two states that was doing the study.

Anybody remember this??????? Would appreciate the lead.

Thanks

There was an article done by CBS News. Go to cbsnews.com the article is States Mull Taxing Drivers By Mile.

If you do not find it, I will be glad to FAX you a copy.

I heard that on the radio. People would be taxed on miles driven instead of fuel consumption. Hey, they got to get our money one way or the other...

If this tax goes towards maintaining the roads, the problem is that heavy vehicles damage roads FAR more than a car or a SUV. Why should I pay more in proportion than the owner of an 18 wheeler who is causing orders of magnitude more damage? Aren't we subsidizing one means of transportation in detriment of others (rail?)?

I wish the rail network was utilized more efficiently, specially in long distance transportation.

I wish they'd start putting back all the rail lines they've torn out! I'd love to see the railroads get really big again. Start shipping goods that way instead of large OTR trucks (nothing against OTR trucks, I just really like trains).

I swear I read somewhere that trains are significantly more fuel efficient than OTR trucks...

On edit: found it here. Railroads are 3 times more fuel efficient than trucks!

-Ryan :)

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to upset any OTR truck drivers. I have nothing against the drivers, companies, maintenance men, or other hard-working people who put in lots of time and effor shipping our goods all over the country. I just happen to like railroads, that's all.

thanks Bill, thats what I was looking for.

Mikel, The trucking companies pay a lot of money for permits, and pay a lot of taxes, that go to wards the road coffers. Trucking companies are responsible for the original fund for the Interstate system starting back in 1955, President Eisenhower stated we need a better system to move the population, Hence, the interstate Hi ways.

Ryan, the trains are more Ton-mile efficient. And are a bit slower, at about six hours.

I am no expert, just facts that I have learned over time.

just my penny's worth.
