You do not have to tow 500 miles at 50 mph... the comment in the owners manual is saying if the truck has under 500 miles on it total, you should tow slowly. You are out of that window.

Tow away Marv!

I think you are looking at the break in period for gas engines. If you look at the Diesel supplement:

The diesel engine does not require a break-in period due to its construction. Normal operation is allowed, providing the following recommendations are followed:

• Warm up the engine before placing it under load.
• Do not operate the engine at idle for prolonged periods.
• Use the appropriate transmission gear to prevent engine lugging.
• Observe vehicle oil pressure and temperature indicators.
• Check the coolant and oil levels frequently.
• Vary throttle position at highway speeds when carrying or towing significant weight.

When the book talks about towing break in, they mean the rear axle.

I don't see any specific mention of "towing" break in restrictions in the 2016 manuals. The owners manual states that for engine and drivetrain (axle, etc) break in to "drive moderately during the first 300 miles. After the initial 60 miles, speeds up to 50 or 55 MPH are desirable". In other words, after 60 miles, go faster, not slower.

The diesel supplement, which I take to supersede the owners manual, mentions towing in the last bullet point of my previous post, which is to vary the throttle speeds. No mention of under 50 MPH for x miles.
