Hi guys. I'm looking for ideas, thoughts, opinions, modifications, parts, etc that you use or have use or know of for doing two things to an '02 Quad-Cab. The truck in question is the one in my avatar and photo gallery. As you can see, it's pretty nice and pretty fancy. And my main priority it to keep it that way and not doing anything to compromise the truck and what it is now, since I'm plenty happy with it as-is. I'd just like to make it a little more enjoyable and practical without making major changes and without breaking the bank. I don't have a real budget in mind, but I'm not going to put $5000 in a stereo for my $15,000 truck I may only drive 5,000 miles a year or spend 500 hours designing and fabricating some custom interior storage system thats going to be in use 50 hours a year max. So let me tell you what I'm looking to do.

First, I want to improve or upgrade the factory stereo, which is an RZAP CD/cassette/EQ unit with Ifinity speakers and steering wheel controls. I want to keep as much of the factory system and function as possilble and I'm probably LEAST flexible when it comes to the steering wheel controls. They just work too well for me to give them up easily.

The other improvement I want to make and that I would probably do simultaneously is getting rid of or modifying the rear passenger seating in exchange for something more cargo friendly. Ideally it would maintain the underseat storage in back and replace the lower seat cushion with a flat platform more suitable for putting luggage, gun cases, etc on top of. As for the backrest, it goes away entirely. Maybe then theres enough room to mount speakers to the rear cab walll area and still be able to lift up the front platform for access.

Everything is sort of negotiable and my MAIN priority is not butchering the truck. I'll modify it, but I'm not going to do anyhing to make it less comfortable and quiet and attractive than it is now. I don't necessarily NEED more or better storage and I don't need more stereo performance. My daily-driver '94 is a regular cab and I get by even on trips. And a decent Alpine CD player with the factory Infinity speakers all in intact and functioning have been "good enough". But when it's back on the road, the '02 is going to be a pleasure vehicle for weekend cruising, vacation driving and emergency transportation in case of problems with the '94 or when it needs some work. Maybe there are some aftermarket solutions available or maybe something Dodge used later on can be installed or maybe you built or know someone who built your own system. I'm open to any and all suggestions, ideas and especially PICTURES of similar setups.

What I'm looking for from the stereo is more volume and more bass. Not hangin with the homeys in the hood bass, but something I can feel in the back of my seat a little bit when Lars is playing double bass during "One". That's about as bass-intensive as my music gets. I'd like to keep as much of the factory system as possible. Especially the steering wheel controls. I have big hands and it's easy for me to stab the wrong button on even a STOCK stereo with DECENT controls, much less an aftermarket head unit with 40 little buttons and a little knob.

Most of my listening is AM/FM radio leaning more toward AM since I'm one of those evil, right-wing conservatives clinging to my God and my guns. And since our FM stations out here all pretty much suck most of the time. The rest of my listening is from my iPod. I've got an iPod touch and an FM transmitter. The problem there is taking my eyes off the road to use the iPod and how easily it can be mistaken for a cell phone if someone can't mind their own business. I don't know what's possible with an iPad, but if I could mount an iPad or similar tablet cleanly and securely within easy reach and get my iTunes that way, it would be better than my currrent "system". I've had Sirius satellite in the past and it has its pros and cons. And maybe I can keep my steering wheel controls AND add SRR and the iTunes capability I really want by installing a factory head unit from a newer truck. Like I said, I really don't know what my options are and I have no set-in-stone plan.

I really know VERY LITTLE about stereo equipment and what's available with something like iPad with internet access as far as good "road" apps. But it did occur to me that a larger platform that can basically replace my iPod and a wireless FM transmitter might be the way to go and still maintain the stock stereo. The main reason I want iTunes on a bigger platform is to make it safer and easier to change songs. I do a lot of skipping around and I've noticed that even on shuffle some stuff comes up almost daily and some songs I almost never hear. I have the entire AC/DC catalog on there and even though I LOVE AC/DC, it can get a litttle old hearing AC/DC every third or fourth song on shuffle. With a bigger screen in a good location I can have a little more access and control with a little less squinting at little screen. I have a Kindle Fire so I do have tablet experience but the memory on mine isn't anywhere near big enough for me. I've got about 6 days of music on my iPod. And a lot of variety. Hank Sr. might lead to Metallica which might lead to Sinatra to Eminem to Sam Kinison to Stevie Ray Vaughan to Skynyrd. ALL roads lead to Skynyrd. But that gives you an idea what I'm looking for as far as sound goes. Like I said, I want some firm bass, but I don't want dash lights flicking in time to the music.

It would be nice to have the stereo upgrades and interior changes work well together, but I can see that could be a challenge and I've already pretty much staked out the rear floor in front of the underseat storage unit for speaker mounting if I need to add speakers. And I'm pretty sure I'm going to be adding speakers and certainly an amp. And I know that the "premium" Infinity speakers aren't near as good as what's available from the aftermarket. So even though I'd LIKE to keep the factory speakers if for no other reason than to avoid disassembly, I realize that might not be reality.

So that about sums it up. Like I said, I'll read or look at anything you have. But just please keep in mind what I said about not being willing to make major modifications to the truck and not being willing to sacrifice the comfort, convenience and appearance I do have no in order to gain something I've survived without this long. I wrote this long, rambling post to try to prevent wasting anyone's time by trying to explain what I'm looking for as well as possible up front instead of having to do a lot of "that's not what I'm looking for" replies later. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

38 views and no help, huh? I must have been a bad boy and got myself put on some sort of "do not talk to" list. Four days ago I couldn't say "Hi" without an argument and now I'm all alone. What a shame. I always find it funny when a discussion forum has a "politics only" board when invariably all of the REAL politicking happens on the other boards. I probably should have expressed a desire to use as MANY aftermarket parts as I can instead of as few as I can. And I'm sure my thread about buying the factory service manual on CD-ROM (for $18) and passing along a lot of very interesting info, questions and comments on various factory "flaws" the aftermarket guys rely on to sell parts didn't help. Specifically the lack of any response to my transmission comments is curious. There was an endless stream of opinions on transmissions a few days before. But I mention "factory service manual" and what ISN'T in it and the silence is deafening. I'm getting the picture that there's a pretty intense anti-OEM/anti-dealership/anti-dealer service department vibe around here. I'm not surprised. I wouldn't want to spend $50,000+ on a new pickup and THEN have to pay professionals to repair it when the warranty was up either. And I'm getting the picture that the aftermarket gravy train might just run right through here like every other forum on the internet. I'd heard TDR was different. It doesn't seem like it. And I have to wonder just who is really writing the checks. It's all nothing but marketing and the aftermarket always offers you that "choice" you don't get at the dealership. FASS vs. AirDog, Goerend vs. Suncoast (although not so much anymore) , Hot-Rod VP44 vs. P-pump conversions (they're REALLY hot right now), etc etc etc. It's too bad no one is willing to start a legitimate tech board and do away with all the politics, marketing, propaganda and manipulation. But then again, as hot as the aftermarket performance market is and with the attention it brings to the diesel pickup "community" in general, it wouldn't surprise me a bit to find out the OEMs have their fingers deep in the pie, too. The internet and social media are supposed to "connect people". B.S. You can't personally "connect" with ANYONE unless they're standing in front of you. And that's the key phrase - knowing where people stand before you trust them enough to spend your money taking their advice. When advice comes with a price, it's not advice. It's marketing.

For the Stereo Head Unit its personal choice, I like Alpine, currently have a Pioneer double din and not real happy with it. I do have steering wheel controls, you can get the adapters off Amazon to make the factory ones work, I also am running an Infinity 425A amp and speakers, all of which can be got off Amazon for under $300, then I ran 16Ga wire from the amp directly through the door harness to the speakers, If you do some sort of sound deadening to put in the doors you can get really good bass with just the 4 door speakers. IMO your best off bypassing the factory amp and what not as much as you can. Crutchfield has adapter harness available to plug into the factory harness, that way will work but you wont get the most potential out of your system compared to an aftermarket amp.

As far as the sound system . I'd go to crutchfield.com . Look though what your options are. I put a Kenwood KVT 696 . I wanted the backup camera , I Pod and Blue tooth. I changed it out about three years ago, I'm happy with it. Haven't done any thing with the speakers yet, been thinking of the Bass speaker in the center front seat. I don't want to give up cargo space under the rear seat .

In my 2005, I went with the Polk DB speakers... they were plug n' play and sounded clean and natural. But they DO like more amplification then the stock head unit, so I I added a 4 channel amp underneath the passenger seat, and then eventaully also a mono amp under the drivers seat for a SMALL subwoofer mounted under the back seat. Right now all of this is run by the oem stereo dash unit (non-infinity system) and you cannot see that the truck is not stock, but it sounds 100% better. That being said, I am going to eventaully be upgrading the head unit to one that has digital sound processeing that helps refine the stereo imaging in the truck even more.

One of the MOST important things that you can do is to sound deaden the doors and floors and even back wall of the truck. Do NOT simply buy roof flashing, or even dynamat, and stick it everywhere in your truck. Instead, take the time to read the how-to links at the link below, and then do it his way...it will be MUCH more effective then what even run of the mill stereo installers do for your truck. Even doing just the doors when you install the new speakers is a nice improvement, but I am going to finish doing my whole truck sometime in the next year

Be SURE to read the how-to links. Don only sells top quality products, his CLD tiles and closed cell foam is some of the best out there, but they are still reasonably priced. The MLV ( mass loaded vinyl) is expensive to ship as it weighs 1# per square foot, more or less just like lead sheeting, which is the point. TYou will need close to 100 sq ft If you decide you want to do your whole truck... let me know and I will post a link for a company that sells qaulity virgin vinyl MLV in full rolls for a good price and they have free shipping too.

Also, if you want to read up more on what stereo components to buy, and MUCH more importantly, how to do a great install, here is a good place to start with both experts and DIY'ers posting PLENTY to read---

diymobileaudio.com/

Like other have said, Crutchfield is a GREAT source for info and parts, but you DO pay higher prices for their excellent customer service...I think it is worth it if you want simple plug n' play with SOLID tech support.

I've been very happy with Alpine decks. Also highly recommend Crutchfield.com. I went with a color changing face deck with Bluetooth and in dash amp. The amp does require it's own power wire from the battery (15amp supply). I typically use Nano USB memory stick for my music. If it's stolen I'm out $10. Never worry about leaving your Ipod in the truck. The deck I bought also has RDS display and can stream music from my phone using Pandora, Slacker, etc. Separate adapter available to maintain steering wheel controls.

Your rear seat adds quite a bit of sound proofing. You'll realize it's gone when driving down the road. Recommend adding sound proofing to the rear wall either way.

And I'm sure my thread about buying the factory service manual on CD-ROM (for $18) and passing along a lot of very interesting info, questions and comments on various factory "flaws" the aftermarket guys rely on to sell parts didn't help.

Many of us have owned the paper service manuals or the CD-ROM for years, we however did not arrive on the TDR forum with our guns blazing! We came here to learn, share and coach in some cases when we were asked for guidance.

Im not a mechanic. I dont work on my own truck. I bought my truck brand new (an 02 purchased the week after 9/11)

The only mod on my truck is an edge ez (and a 4in exhaust that I had installed when on a road trip when the oem rusted off).

I dont know what the dealers are/were like in other parts of the country. But the 2 that I dealt with here in seattle were both incompetent and they were crooks. One charged me $100 to check out a noise in the rear end (when it was still under warranty). Then they just did a diff service and added anti chatter stuff that should have been there in the first place. The other one didnt want to replace the lift pump under warranty. My well respected diesel mechanic convinced them it would be in their interest to make the repair (under warranty). I have other stories.

Ive dealt with several chev and buick dealers over the years, and never had the bad experiences I had with the dodge dealerships. Oh, and I also had a bad experience with a dodge dealership in anchorage when all I did was try to get an oil change there. I ended up going to jiffy lube.
