When someone, who doesn't own a 3rd gen, and has no first hand knowledge of this setup, comes to the forum, quotes a couple of articles that may or may not have anything to do with the new G-56 and the DMF setup in the 2005 CTD, and then sums it up by saying:

"It will give you a nice education on the Dual Mass Flywheel ... then you can make up your mind if you want one of these potential disasters or not. "

What do you expect us poor 2005 buyers to say... "Thanks for all the info??"

Now show me anywhere in this thread that someone asked his opinion about the suitability/durability of this setup...

Light'en up pal ... EVERYONE'S opinion was asked for in the beggining of this thread ...

"I may need to move up to a 3500 and am considering a 6spd this time since I am towing more frequently than I had originally planned. I am looking for first impressions from any G56 users. Good or bad, I just want your opinions. Thanks. "

I may not own an '05, but I can research others opinions about the DMF setup ... good/bad/or indiferent. It just seams that the concenses is that the DMF was a bad idea in many applications ... the odds are that the new MB G56 will suffer the same fate ... DC could not leave well enought alone. From what I have read the DMF is not used in class 6 and up trucks ... and it must be for a reason.

I'm sure Southbend will have a conversion when people begin to rip up the new DMF setup and fry friction rings ... just another price we ALL pay for adding more Ummmph to the engins.

Remember, this thread was not created by someone who ALL-READY laid their money down ... it was created by someone who is THINKING of laying their money down. I don't expect you "poor 2005 buyers" to say anything ... you folks are on the "bleeding" edge and your opinions will be much sought after in the months and years ahead. NO ONE WISHES you folks misforturne with the new transmission, but the research shows that the DMF has not lived up to a problem free existance ... such are the slings and arrows pioneers endure.

And anyway, when you pick up the new truck you can say ... "FATCAT ... what does that prick know! I love my truck!".

And again relax and light'en up. ;)

I am one of the "Fester Bester Testers" for the new G56. I have a total of 1009 miles on my new truck and so far there are no issues with any components including the new G56. At the dealership, the truck I test drove had the NV5600. The truck I ordered came with the G56. I have no previous experience with either transmission. I like the shift pattern of the G56 over the NV5600 and "finding the gears" for the first time was easier in the G56. I think it was Tommygun who said shifting into the various gears was a little "notchy". I agree. Not as smooth as my 300zx but for obvious reasons. All-in-all I really like the truck and the transmission does just what it is supposed to do.

Frank;

Thanks for post. It was nice to hear from someone who actually has one. It looks like I will be making the move fairly soon. I am going to try to make the May Madness event to get some first hand experience with the new gear box. For those that offered there opinions, I appreciate the input.

Hopefully, the new 6 spd will match or exceed the excellent history of the NV5600. I know there are some doubters out there and your concerns may be well founded. But, if you look back at the history of trans. choices for the CTD (both auto and manual) they have always improved. Remember the old Getrag, then onto the NV4500, next the NV5600. The same happened with 47RE and now 48RE. I'll keep my fingers crossed and keep my ears open for real world reports. Now the DMF... ..... thats another story. Time will tell.

As usual, this board has proven to be the best source of information and lively debate. Thanks TDR

Potential G56 problem

I was talking to the customer service manager at a large dealership, he said something about a problem with the G56,and there would be a delay. It may just be as a production issue. I don't have any facts. But perhaps tomeygun has heard.

Good Luck

Mine should be in late next week or early the following week. I'll update you guys. I liked the NV5600 though, wish I could have got a truck with one.

DC dealers must sell every one they get no problem. The dealers should order more.

There is not a 6 speed truck within 1000 miles I'm told, Ford or Dodge. They won't stock them, not even dump trucks, because they will not sell. I have never seen a 6 speed Chevy Duramax in person.

I stopped by my local dealer to drive one..... They had fourteen 05's, thirteen auto's and one NV5600. Do people not shift their own gears anymore

Amazing they even had any. I drove 400 miles to drive an NV 5600 truck, came home, and two weeks later ordered my truck with the G-56.

Before I was enlightened, I was actually looking for a 6 speed D-max. The dealer did a locate and found ZERO in the entire country. Only way you could have one was to order one, and you could not get it with the nice interior. Stripper models with bench seat only. What a joke.

When it came time to purchase a flatbed for our shop, I was directed to buy a Ford

I ordered an automatic, because I knew that I would not be the only one driving it. There are too many idiots out there that can't drive a manual transmission equipped vehicle properly. I didn't want to have to pay for a clutch every 6 to 12 months.

I guess people are just getting lazy, or just don't care to shift any more. In their defense, auto transmissions have come a long way since the advent of electronic control. My next truck might be an auto. Easier to make quick 1/4 mile times :-laf

BTW-I'm not saying people who can't shift are idiots. There are just plenty of idiots that can't shift.

I have a truck on order and it should be here next week ( should have been here on the 11th ). Dodge says there clutches are junk, no clutch is warranted longer than 12000 miles or 12 months, in any truck ( or car probably ) The deal is, with the power that will probably be added to my truck, even the clutch with the NV5600 would have need to be replaced anyway. As soon as south-bend has clutch replacments in some of the G-56 apps. and as soon as they are proven, I'm going to buy one for the day I will need one.

Like you said..... just another price we ALL pay for adding more Ummmph to the engins. "

This is from daily news from Dodge.

The 6spd manual transmission (DEG) is on material restriction and has been turned off Tops until further notice. As of 3/23/05

Tops is were the dealers place orders. Here in our dealer we order about 40% manual transmission's to the auto's. But for the last six months the 6spd has not been very plentiful as DC have not built that many because of the switch and now looks like that may last a little longer. It is very frustrating for us here at the dealer were we sell quite of few 6spds. :)
