Hey all, since I live in Germany, and they have some cockamamy system involving Kilometres here, I was hoping to find an Instrument cluster that is set up for Kilometres. I am coming to the states in a couple of weeks, and would like to bring one back. It is for a 2001 2500 Cummins... Thanks

Thanks for the replies. My Dad knows a bunch of folks in the land up-over. He said he would check it out. But at 77, with all of the Model A tours, Church and whatnot, he kind of forgot. DIY... Thanks, but 'Factory Mopar', not only does not have what I need, but they are not 'shy' with their prices...

Check with some of the companies that convert USA and Canadian vehicles.

There are several; here is an example of one:
A&T Leasing - Auto Export Canada - Speedometer Conversions

Directory:
Consumer

Then there are aftermarket overlays that may work. The following link is for a gasser. They may be able to throw together a diesel tach overlay with the metric set if you contact them.
Gasser Metric: 1998-2002 Dodge Ram METRIC KPH KMH White Face Gauges 98-02 - Whitegauges.net

Diesel non-metric: 1999-2002 Dodge Ram Diesel Cummins White Face Gauges - Whitegauges.net

Thanks for the input. I will check out the links. The speedo is not so important. Having the Odometer read in KM is what I am looking for... JK

I looked up the odometer function and discription in the '02 service maual and is says that the unit of measure, kilometers or miles, is determined at the time of manufacture and is not changeable. This means a metric cluster assembly is required. Maybe the Canadian e-bay would have some. 00 01 DODGE RAM 2500 PICKUP SPEEDOMETER | eBay I don't know if the distance display value can be changed at the dealer, or if you must go through a certified conversion company.

Thanks for the link. is the Automatic trans cluster different than the Manual? Jeepers, programming. What the heck is involved? I know a Dodge dealer over here that can probably do it. Thanks for the link. I sent a question to the seller. JK

As stated above you can not change a clusters units. My 01 was built for Canada and brought back by a company in Montana. Even some US dealers that claim to be experts on these trucks have no clue. I talked to some of them and they did not want anything to do with me when I told them my panel was not metric. I was told they did not know what had been done or how many miles where on it since someone changed the cluster. After buying the factory service manual it took me less than 3 minutes to find the description of operation referred to by PBJ. If you read it carefully it says the mileage is kept in the PCM and converted to the appropriate units by the cluster so the mileage should be correct.

A lot of trucks where brought back here and converted so there should be metric clusters out there but the importers probably just scrapped them.

I will see if I can get the importers information off the certification label tomorrow. It will not hurt to try them if they are still around.

Thanks, that would be great... Jonathan

The auto cluster has a window in the lower right to show the gear (P R N D 2 1)

Thanks. I figured it was something like that. The seller sent me a message saying the same.

Funny thing, my Instrument Cluster has such a window (see attached). I do not remember ever seeing anything displayed in it... JK

I have one I pulled out of my Canadian truck. . its hanging on the wall as art... your welcome to it, the problem with it was the lower left odometer faded out right after buying it and I think I tried to rob a couple idiot bulbs off the board for the 4x4 light and cruise... they are soldered in... anyway you could transfer the face onto your cluster and have it converted.

fyi, it's out of a late '98 auto 12V.

also the lower right window shifter can be traded easy for auto or manual... . I went through 5 clusters before I got one that worked halfway right... once you open one up they are really basic to work on and swap around... try finding a 98 12 valve cluster... . fricken chicken lips.

pulling it, is the biggest hassle is dropping the knee bolster on the dash under the steering wheel and unhooking the shifter cable on the auto trans indicator VERY carefully tender little widgit!! the rest can be done from the driver seat in 5 mins.

anyway this face will drop on your cluster for sure, after that I dont know much...

I do know when I dropped a MPH cluster into my truck it worked right on... my mph is off about 2mph as I went a tad taller tire but that can be adjusted with the Mopar Scan tool... I still need to get to frineds place and reset mine.

keep in mind the odometer will recall the miles it has on it if you swap in a diff unit not what your truck has, so that will have to be reset by a odometer shop.

The tag under the hood is gone but the importer placed a new sticker in the door jam. The name on it is Truck City USA. I seem to recall that they where in Montana but I did not find them with a quick Google search. However what I did find was that the NHTSA maintains a list of licensed importers here

List of Registered Importers

This is a long list sorted by state. Truck City may be licensed under another name but what did jump out at me was "SPEEDOMETER & AUTO ELECTRIC " in Billings Montana. They may be able to help.

I went back over the section in the FSM and all the trucks use the same cluster whether they are gas, diesel, automatic or manual. The automatic trucks have a gear indicator on a cable attached to the back and the back and the manual tracks have a block off plate instead. I do not thing a gas truck cluster will work because some of the features will not be enabled in the software of the cluster. I do not think a 12 valve one is the same as a 24 valve one though.

sorry to much information this is one of those techno posts gone wild... the short is the KPH face will drop on your white Gauge base. . only snag is the odometer will still read miles until reset by a shop... I picture is worth a thousand words and I beleieve these may help.

B.
