Iceman:
The reason for the razor sharp spring is the seat that fits between spring and the ball. It looks similiar to a "push nut" or a "hat" the reduced end goes inside the spring and the larger end rests against the ball. I'm guessing it slipped out during the "tweaking" process or was never present, hence the early failure.
Shimming is a viable alternative, with good results oftentime.
Search several posts I made last fall for the latest greatest part number and the bosch tsb I referenced. You want the the bosch number ending in 092 rather than 086. Their may be another greatest part no. , by now. .
Piers price is hard to beat! Maybe a new one is a simple solution.
On the spring my transmission buddy, James Northrum (Inarush76@aol.com) and I have played with some transmission valve body springs and the ball valve, they are both sae rather than metric and significant r&d is necessary to get the spring just right, only to have the spring give unreliable results.
Unless the exact or near exact oe parts can be sourced, you are chasing your tail and creating an unreliable fuel psi situation (IMHO).
Good luck,
Andy
