Rustproofing is the only thing that helps. Find a place that will do a good job. Forget the warrantee, they will only give you up to your money back and they will charge a lot more for it.

You can get some Rust-o-leum in a small (1/2 pint) can at any of the home centers, or local hardware store, and brush it on with an acid or other small brush. They also have a rusty metal primer (red oxide in color) that you could put on first. Really any enamel would work. I've had good experiences with RO products and they are always available even at WallyMart.
 
Go with a true Red Oxide primer, nothing works better, that is why all commercial metalwork, from construction to ship building use it. Rustoleum makes one (not available in spray cans), but it is overpriced. Go to any paint store, they should have it available. Another option would be to let it rust slightly then use Duro Extend or some other rust catalyst, it uses a chemical reaction to turn the rust into a sealed primer.
