gooseneck hitch conversion vs fifth wheel

Solar and off the grid question...

I am in NJ and am looking for a 32 foot gooseneck trailer new or used where is a good place to buy. Also what is the law on pulling a gooseneck do I need a CDL? at what weight do you need a cdl?

Thanks ,Marc

You need to check with your local DMV.

I have been told I don't need one here in VA by several on this site, and it seems that is true by the wording of their rules.

But according to DMV, I still have to go across the scales because my vehicles gvwr is over 7500 lbs.

I also had a DOT employee tellme if either of my vehciels had a gvwr over 10,000 lbs i had ot have a CDL.

If your GCWR is over 26,001 lbs, or if you are doing it as a job (commerce), you need a CDL. GCWR is the gvwr for your truck + the gvwr for the trailer added together. They can not total more than 26,001 lbs.

Some states don't enforce the 26,001 lb limit if it is a personal vehicle tho. That's why I said check your local DMV, and I'd check in at a weigh station just to make sure. That's what I'm gonna do. if they tell me I don't have to stop, then I won't.

Good Luck finding out a straight answer tho.

enclosed or flatbed? There is a member that makes/sells flatbeds. You will have to check with your local laws but most states it is 26,001 before requiring a CDL.

I say BUILD YOUR OWN! I bought the plans from www.trailerplans.com and I've almost finished building a 20ft dump gooseneck. She's a bueaty but it is time consuming. <br> If you don't have the time then check out txgooseneck member here... he's known to have good trailers.

my trailer (see sig) weighs in at 4400 lbs, according to the registration. I haven't been able to actually get it weighed yet. Waiting on the title so I can get plates.

How far are you willing to travel??

I am asking, because my friend owns a trailer company in North Austin (Georgetown). His name is Doug Meadows, and the company is Rolling M Trailer Sales. Call him at 512-784-8236. I am pretty sure he can make you a good deal, should you be willing to travel down here to pick one up. Just tell him I told you to call (My full name is Chris Harlan), not that it matters or anything, but its nice to let him know I am referring people from out of state to his sales, ya know?? Anyways, good luck with your purchase, and hope he can help you out!
