I am currently looking at purchasing a new or used truck... I currently have a 24V 2nd gen that I sled pull and somewhat daily drive with... My wife and I are looking at some trucks but I'm not that up to date on these common rails. . Truck will be used for daily driving and towing only... You guys have any suggestions on what to look for on these trucks and what I should shy away from... How are these new 5 speed Auto's holding up?? I love my 6 speed but if my wife is driving especially with the gooseneck we would prefer to have an auto (just for easier driving in town). . Has anyone seen some common problems with the common rail engines?? Just curious. . I'm more knowledgable with the 12V and 24V 2nd gens than anything... Thanks for any info... ...

There is no new 5 speed auto in a 3rd generation with Cummins(1500 gas has one). 6 speed auto is on its way for 07 in fact two of them. The 48re 4speed auto has not had many issues.

The autos seem to hold up as long as less than 90hp is added to the stock power. They are alot like the 2nd gen trans, a TQ and VB will be an improvement. They are like any auto it depends on how you drive, and how well you take care of it.

As far as engine problems I don't think there are widespread problems like lift pumps and vps on the 24v's. Some have injector issues but I don't think that is as widespread.

The 03s and early 04s get the best mileage.

No 5 speed Auto??? HHHmmmm..... Makes me wonder about the salesman now. . He told me that the truck I test drove had a 5speed auto. . Of course evertime I stopped to count the shifts I got carried away and forgot because I was checking my 1/8 mile ET's. :-laf All and All this truck was very nice. . It was a 3500 Quad Cab Long bed with 35X12. 5R17 Tires. Two Tone Graphite color I thought was a very sharp truck... I also stood back and pictured a gooseneck flatbed trailor hooked to it with my 02 on the trailor :-laf :-laf ... That was a sweet lookin view. . :-laf The truck has 45K Miles on it and they are asking 30,000 for the truck. . I asked if they could get the price down around 28K and they dropped to 29K... The entire truck is in Excellent condition except for some dents and scratches in the tailgate and they are not minor dents. . Looks like someone dropped something on it more than once. . But the over all truck is clean inside and out. . Thanks for the input you have shared if you know of anything else just post it please... :)

Hemi is a 5 speed auto. I would think that at the price they wanted for that truck and IF you were going to finance it you'd do better with a new one considering the finance rates of used to new and the incintives on new. Do what I do I walk in,ask for the sales manager and I say looking to buy at below invoice,no bull crap, show me what you can do. Told a realitive this looking a new Ford 150s and they did and then he said can't you do even better. Sales manager looked pained and said Oh heck and found a way to knock another $500 off. He bought in a hour and about $7k or better off window sticker with great interest rates.

I would agree with DPKetchum, at that price you should be able to get a new 06 with better rates for a similar price in the end. I know a person who paid a little more than that for a NEW 06 dually earlier this year.

If you aren't getting the price you want, call Woodhouse Ford in Blair NE. They will deal over the phone and deliver the truck and pick up your trade. I haven't heard of many places that beat their prices. It is worth a try because of the factory financing.

The common problem I see is that of leaky injectors. May just be my imagination and I may get flamed, but it seems to be on power modded trucks mostly. These 3rd gens seem to be much more tempermental about power additions than 1st and 2nd gens.

Get one and leave the engine stock. You will like it! Oo.

Oh, flame suit on! :-laf

I have considered selling my 2003 HO to get a new mega cab. I have 48000 something miles loaded SLT with SRT hood, black sport... Pulls our gooseneck nicely... ... . prob be in the 25-26k range. .

It's a done deal!!!!

Well today my wife and I bit the bullet!!! Since The dealership wanted a like new price for a used truck we decided to scout out a new one... With some wheeling and dealing we agreed on a price and are now the new owners of our second CTD and our first 3rd Gen... It's a white two tone 2006 2500 Quad Cab Long bed with a six speed transmission and 3:73 gears. . ;) Future mods for the truck will be basically a set a guages and goose neck hitch (so my wife can pull our soon to be purchased gooseneck trailer and haul my 02 2nd gen to the truck pulls)!!! :-laf :-laf Looks like my 02 daily driver will now become a full part time play toy and sled truck :-laf :-laf :-laf !!!!

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can get my wife to let me drive the truck just once???  Since we left the dealership she won't even let me have the second set of keys to it!!!  A little help guys!!!

Congrats on the new ride!!!

The only way I got my wife out of the truck (other than she is too short to push the clutch in) is to buy her a 2006 Charger R/T. Now I have to fight to drive her car but she still likes to ride in the truck and look down to make fun of people.

Congrats on the new truck.

Can't help you on the wife thing, my wife has never driven my truck, so I don't know what that is like.

Congratulation on your new truck. It sounds great. I have the same problem with my wife, she won't let drive my own truck very much. On our trip to Alaska she wanted to do all the driving. I think she has a little diesel in her blood.

After my wife totaled my truck last month she swears she will not drive my new one when it arrives. We will see how long that lasts ;) .

I had to buy my wife a new car to get her to leave my truck alone. I was on the phone the other day with her when she told me how she had been driving my truck instead of her car for the last week because she needed to get an oil change done on the car. She couldn't understand why I was ticked off. I love my wife but sometimes.....

Oh yeah, congrats on your wifes new truck! :-laf

Congrats on the new truck. I'm sure you will enjoy it. My wife has driven my truck twice. She say it's too big to drive :) She also doesn't like how loud it is she says it hurts her ears. Hmmm... maybe I should shop for one of them new quiet type 3rd gens?! :-laf
