Hi all,
New to the site and have a few questions. I checked out the FAQ's pages but the link for the buyers guide was not working. I'm hopefully going to be buying a 92-93 in the next few months and just looking for some tips on what I should look out for . From what I can tell the stick is the way to go but driving in Philly every day will suck. Any tips on best mods to do right off the bat would be welcome as well. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the TDR!
You didn't specify weather you are looking for a
D - 2WD or a
W - 4WD.
each have their mods and issues. I had a '92 W250, and probably the best thing I did was to put in the Skyjacker front springs.
The other sore point with the earlier automatics is the lack of a lockup torque converter. The stock converter slips right past the useful range of that engine. You should try and drive one of each. Advice- don't be afraid to lugg it!
Happy hunting!

Thanks man .I think I'm going to go for a 4 wheel drive for snow purposes. I work no matter what weather we are having . Most of the trucks I'm finding are on the west coast, so it might end up being a decent road trip .

There are some 1 gen diehards here who are more tuned in, so please be patient while they climb on. If you do go look at something, just look out for typical issues in any truck like chassis/ body/ powertrain damage.

I'm in no rush, haha .Waiting on the cash flow anyway. I just want to do as much research beforehand as I can. I've been wanting a first gen for years and I'm finally in a spot to get one.

I wouldn't get too wrapped up in trying to find exactly what you want....ie. auto vs. manual, color, options, etc. Rather, find one in the best overall shape you can in your price range and then make it your own through modifications or upgrades. You will be so much farther ahead starting with a good solid truck.

Great advice. If I ever get a chance, I'd do one with a hot P pump and 45honey handshaker.

I was just thinking about my former '92 this morning. That old truck would have been awesome with the common rail out of one of my 3rd gens, tastefully modded, with a mild lift and maybe 35"-37" tires.......

I looked around for roughly 1.5 years before I found what I was looking for... Low miles and not a rust bucket. The Stupidly Expensive cost of a new truck fueled my search and my determination. In the end, I found a real cream puff out west, and at a decent price, so I had it shipped here to CT. Loving it!!!

Yeah most of what I'm finding now is out west. I don't mind traveling. My main thing is no rust. Everything I'm finding is 16k-20k asking though .

Indeed, these trucks are past the depreciation bell curve. If you are selling a mint one, you can get phone numbers for it.

Agreed... and 16K to 20K is still far less expensive than new, and you'll have something to show for it, quite literally. These older trucks aren't just popular with truck guys either; everyone appreciates a nice clean vintage vehicle. I can't drive anywhere in my 1990 W250 and go unnoticed. Folks are always waving at you on the street, or making offers to buy it. Sometimes it feels like I'm driving around in my 67 Charger and not some old pickup truck. Of course, my wife insists it's not the truck that draws their attention, it's because she's riding in the truck... LOL!
Bottom line... I have the truck I wanted and needed, and coincidently, it also doubles as a show vehicle when or if desired.

Yeah .There is a reason I want the first gen cummins. They look great. I have a 66 charger, don't find many people with first gen chargers.

I hear ya... I had to have a single cab, long bed, 4X4, Auto... That was my minimum excepted standard. With enough patience, time & effort, I finally got lucky. I found exactly what I was after, and quite a bit more!!!

Just be aware of Scammers if searching on-line... there's no shortage of those out there, especially where clean 1st Gen's are concerned.
