Off Roading Looking to get a different ATV

I have 2 quads. One is a polaris Sportsman 500 HO 4x4... the other one is a Polaris predator 500. .

my parents ride the sportsman. . they are 73 and 74 yrs old and love to go to the desert... . Also we put our Miniature Schnausers in milk crates on the rack and they ride as well... .

I want to get a different Quad so they are more comfortable to go on the trails and I think I found it... .

I was looking at the Yamaha Rhino.....

It has less sus. travel but similar ground clearance. One of the things that is swaying me to the arctic cat is they have nice arm-rests on the seat (comfort for my parents). .



So what do ya think? what is the reputation of the Arctic cat engine and drivetrain? This uses the 650 engine used in it's regular quad.

I'd buy the Yamaha and put some nicer armrests on it. Yamahas are bullet-proof. The Arctic Cat is a new model this year and I believe my latest issue of Dirt Wheels (or maybe last month's issue) tested them and found some reliablility problems. If you're going to spend that much money I'd go with a proven winner rather than a new model. As always, just my 2 cents. That and 98 more cents will get you a cup of coffee.

Get the Arctic cat

I had one of their 400 model 4x4s and I won't ever buy anything else! I ran that thing through everything and it never slowed down even one bit. I ended up running 27in Outlaws and a full snorkel kit and it would out run all the Hondas that I rode with hands down! They can't even keep the Prowlers in dealerships down here cause they are selling like hot cakes(so they can't all be wrong)

Hadn't seen the Arctic Cat before but I have a Yamaha Rhino 660. Thing is bullet proof and will go anywhere compliments of the selectable front locker. Also plenty fast. I also use it to push the boat in and out of the garage, no problem. My only gripe is that as a deer hunting vehicle its kind of loud. I'm going to try a couple of different mufflers to see if I can get it quieter.

Have you checked the new 450 Rhino? They're getting terrific reviews. Same setup as the 660 Rhino, but a lot cheaper. The reviewers in Dirt Wheels say the 450 has tons of torque. It is a proven engine.

I have had hondas and artic-cats and love both. However I have bought 3 Arctic Cats since 99 and will never buy anything else! They ride awesome, have plenty of power, high ground clearence, AWESOME WARRANTY although I have never needed it. I am 24yrs old and drive the **** out of mine and have wrecked it a couple of times and they just keep on going. I too am going to by Prowler in the very near future and am not worried one bit. The Arctic Cat's new engine is a torque monster from what I hear.

I had a magazine of several units and I found the arctic cat has the most gr. clearance and sus. travel.



The kabota has like 8" clearance, the Prowler has 12. 25" ... the Rhino has 7" sus. travel ... the Prowler has 10"...



With all the other things it has including a nice seating, I think as alot of others here said the Arctic cat engines are good, I will most likely get that... .

Yamahas just S--K. Yeah right. Doesn't Arctic Cat use Suzuki engines in their quads? :-laf

Arctic-Cat uses Kaw. engines in the 650 but came out with there own this year and I hear it rocks and has awesome torque and low end power.

Been riding them since the late 60's and haven't had a bad one yet. I think a lot of the Yamaha quads are made in the USA too. I have three Bruins and a Grizzly, and if I remember correctly they're all made somewhere in Georgia (at least the Bruins). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.



I only wish my Dodge truck and all my tractors were half as reliable as the worst Yamaha I've ever owned (no, I'm not a Yamaha dealer and I don't own any Yamaha stock).

We have two polaris rangers on the ranch that get the tar beat out of them. They hold up pretty well. They do ride kind of rough though. We also had a polaris 6 wheeler before, I liked that one the best. Not as maneuverable, but rode much nicer. That thing would have climbed a telephone pole if it got in the way.

The biggest reason I am getting a side by side is for my elderly parents (73 and 74) who love to go riding but are old enough that they would rather ride that kind and not the regular kind...



Even when they are gone and I go out, I am not a basher or crasher through the brush or mud bogger or beat the units to death... ... Just like to trail ride and do some dunes or the Red Rock Moab trails... . I am more interrested in the size and the ground clearance and articulation of the suspension...



The Arctic cat has 3" more suspension travel than the Rhino and similar ground clearance... . The arctic cat is wider then the Rhino by I think 5 or 6". . a factor for some trails I bet... The prowler has Lap-belts where as the Rhino has 3 point seat belts... ...



Is there going to be any real aftermarket items for the Prowler soon? Or do you think I should get the Rhino for the skinnier travel and the better items available and not worry about the suspension travel amount? Could always get a lift kit for that thing I guess... .
