I have decided to sell the 2000 and upgrade to an 04-06. My biggest question is how many issues are guys having with the stock auto transmission. I have never owned an automatic behind a cummins. I live deap in the rocky mountains so everywhere i go i have to deal with a pass, could wear on an auto alot pulling multiple times a week.

I am thinking i should hold out until i find a 6 speed but what kind of results have you guys found.

The one i am looking at now is an 06 with 114,000 miles and an auto, no add-ons or gauges. dealer looking to get 22,000. Anything else i can check to have some confidence in the truck.

Thanks for all the help.

Wait for the manual. I love mine and owned a DTT formally in my '98. 5. There's lots for sale on these forums.

It may be the "Needle in the hay stack" but if you can find a DEC. '06 built, '07, 5. 9 with the G56, you get the later ratio trans. The difference is mainly 6th gear is a . 74 instead of a lower . 79. That or look for a '04. 5 with the Nv5600 6spd. I also sold my '01. 5 with a DTT auto for the '07, 5. 9, 6 spd. Hated the gap between drive and OD.

An early 05 also has the NV5600. See my signature.

Since we currenty have one of each, I can truly say that I that I have been very impressed with the 48re auto in the '04. 5. With somewhere near 200K of well abused miles on it now, it has been a very good trans. It's obvously starting to show it's age, but still shifts solid and shows no signs of slip. I'd still prefer to drive that truck over the '07 G56 except when towing. That's where the G56 really shines.

With that said, I would be very uneasy buying any used automatic with that many miles on it if I didn't know exactly how that trans was maintained and how that truck was used. Just too much to go wrong to take a chance in my opinion.

I'm biased since I'm selling my 06 right now. No problems with the 48RE. I have grown to like it quite a bit. I do tow on a semi-regular basis to a max trailer weight of 10k. No problems at all with the transmission or the engine. I wanted a 6sp, but didn't like the low gears of the G56 at the time I purchased this one. I put on a fair amount of rode miles, not towing, and wanted the higher gears. Its been a great truck. If you tow heavy, then stick with the manual. If you tow 10k and less in your area, I wouldn't worry with the 06 48RE.

I purchased my 06 used with 48k on it. It came all stock and I got it from a private party. I paid $23. 500 for it. The one you describe has considerably more miles. I have the auto and have learned to like it. Shifts fine. This is the first auto for me. I like it for backwoods driving and I tow a small pop up trailer that it pulls no problem. . I think you could do better on the price for that many miles.

Its good to ask what the truck towed and for how long. That will give you a better idea of what you might be in for later on Ex... . Brakes, Clutch. Transmission, Front end

Thanks for the advise, i just picked up an 06 with the manual 6 speed last night. Very glad i held out for the manual.
Let the BOMBING begin!
The best things I did for mileage on my '07 was the Smarty jr and the EMS free spin hub conversion.
The main issue on a G56 truck is the lousy dual mass flywheel and weak clutch.
With the early G56 lower 6th gear, taller tires work well without over gearing. The Smarty can then correct the speedo.

Post us a picture and specs on the NEW truck
