Well, guys, at 76k miles, I think my lift pump is shot. I bought my truck (99, 4x4, NV4500) about 10k miles ago, so I can't be sure when/if the last one went.

Pulling into the lot at work, the engine stumbled to 400 rpm or so when I pushed the clutch in for a stop sign, then went back to idle. Next stop sign, it died, and I could not restart it. Couldn't hear the LP running when I bumped the starter, either (of course, it stalled right in front of the main entrance, where one of my PSD-driving buddies was watching  ).

I pushed it to a parking space and called the dealer. They told me it was probably the lift pump (I was glad to hear this, as some have reported dealers feigning ignorance that the LP has a problem), and of course it was covered under the 100k engine warranty. Unfortunately, I got stuck with the tow bill ($60 for four miles  ), as roadside assistance goes at 36k. I went out and tried to start it again after a while, and while I could hear the LP run now, no amount of bumping could get it to fire up.

Dealer seems to be okay, so far (Autoway Dodge in Clearwater--they were listed as one of the top dealers in the last TDR issue, if that means anything). Said they'd check the lift pump and see if the VP44 had set any codes. Oddly, service tech stated that Chrysler won't let them stock either part--have some kind of STAR approval, or something, and if they determined either was bad, they'd have to order it.

So whaddya think, guys? Since the thing just died while running, with no warning, after running fine for about six miles this morning, no hard start, I'm guessing the VP44 might be toast? I changed the fuel filter about one month/1k ago without prefilling the canister, and managed to get it to start (though it took a few tries).

I thought of changing the LP myself, but since I've got about 25k left on the engine warranty, I'd like this documented by a dealer, in case the VP44 is bad.

And yeah, I know I need gauges. I've got my EGT/Boost/FP/pillar mount all picked out (DiPricols, I think), but getting married and moving 700 miles is expensive.

And does anyone think I might be able to get DC to pick up the tow bill, after all? :D

Thanks,

I maybe totally offbase but I'm betting the VP is toast. My truck ran fine with a dead lift pump it was just making the VP do all of the work when I found it.

Seems strange go me that it stumbled around idle. the injection pump may be headed south. Make sure you get some good documentation on the diagnosis and repair. and if your vp44 is going bad, hope it completely dies in the next 25,000 miles.

Well, the dealer just called me back. Said the LP is bad, he's ordering a new one, and he thinks he can get it overnighted (I'll not be happy if she's in the shop until Monday--might get lonely, with all those strange vehicles around  ). He said that the VP44 looked fine, though, as there were no 'overheat codes, or anything like that'.

So here's another question--if the injection pump has been damaged, will it necessarily put out a code? I've heard that only the specialized Bosch shops are set up for testing a VP44, so I'm wondering if something could have been damaged, and maybe just didn't set a code...

I'd just hate to have the injection pump die at 100,001 miles because it ran for who-know-how-long on a bad LP. I'll be sure to keep any documentation of the complaint/repair, but I'm not sure if that will help, out of warranty.

Anyone have any luck getting a VP44 replaced when it's out of warranty for a situation like this?

VP44 dead, no codes set

Looks like my question just got answered for me. Dealer called back and left a message that my injection pump is dead, too, new part's being ordered, so it will be Monday or Tuesday before I get my truck back  . I haven't had a chance to call back and query him any further, but last time, he told me no codes were set, so I guess they hooked up the new LP and found a dead VP44. I was expecting the 0216 code, or something similar.

Anyone else have an injection pump die spontaneously, and not set any codes?

Tbrudder, when my VP went toes up, it didn't set any codes. Did it about 8k miles after installing fuel pressure gauge. LP was dead when gauge installed so no idea how long it was running with no LP.

Great, now you can get a gauge and start fresh. New lp and vp44!

:D

My thoughts exactly. I was a bit disappointed/apprehensive at first when they told me I didn't need the VP44 replaced. Yeah, I hate not having the truck for the weekend, but if it gets me a new injection pump without fighting the dealer/DC to get it, I think I can deal with that...

Since I'm not the only one to have it go out without setting a code, I'm thinking it's too bad Bosch won't let DC test the pumps themselves...

The lift pump just went out on my sons 99. He has around 150000 miles, changes fuel filter every 10000 miles. He just changed filter like he had done in the past but it would no start. You could here lift pump run but it sounded kinda weak. This last weekend and no shops here in Austin had any they would have to order one so he went to the dealer in La Grange and I think they had 3 in stock and sold it far a reasonable price and he put it on and alls well. He put about 700 miles on it this week going to work. His gave him no indications or problems.

Well, I got my truck back last night, and she runs just fine again. :D

Autoway Dodge was really good to work with--it would seem they have at least one competent diesel tech (I was worried, as you don't see a lot of CTDs around here), and I didn't have to go through any of the 'that's the first bad transfer pump I've ever seen', or 'just because it won't run doesn't mean it's your injection pump' like I read about in others' experiences. I called, told them they symptoms, and that I thought the LP was out, maybe the VP44, too, and they said that was probably it. Checked it per the TSB, got the parts shipped from Chrysler (I'm still a bit confused as to why DC won't let dealers stock either item... ), and got it installed just like they said they would.

All covered under warranty, except the $60 for the tow.

None too soon, either--I was getting really tired of driving my wife's Mustang...
