What do you tow and how often?
A lot and enough.

35-40K (combined) & 1000miles/week

I wish I had seen that before I had the clutch replaced a couple weeks ago. Coulda saved a little labor.

I honestly don't know what I'm going to do with it yet. Rebuilding it I don't see as much of an option. I'm all for preventative maintenance, but I have to draw the $$ line somewhere and just gamble.

What constitutes a "good core".

What constitutes a "good core".

case not broken, shafts in good shape, gears in good shape. . basically a good transmission with worn out synchros. .

i don't know if they make gear sets for the 5600's. . it looks like it is a piece out of #2 gear set. . myself, i'd run it while i was looking for an another transmission that will get rebuilt and the fresh trans will sit in the wings waiting to go in if/when the broken one fails for good

its alot cheaper to rebuild a good core, blow that trans up and you will eat the core charge cause ti wont be rebuildable..... just my . 02 cents

So far I've found Standard Gear and Blumenthals. Neither website sys much about the nv5600.

Anybody making heavier duty versions other than ATS? They want a little over $5K + $3K core. I don't mind paying a little extra for something better, but dang near double is nuts.

Anybody know a good rebuilder in MN or anywheres close?

Midwest Transmission (888-824-2012) in Zumbrota MN. Or even Zumbrota Bearing and Gear(507-732-7994) also in Zumbrota MN.

I ordered a remaned unit from NAPC in Canada for a customer that lost a few teeth like that.

Another one, mounted in an F550, we had rebuilt locally for about the same amount as the reman unit, save shipping and core charge.

Who was the local outfit? Still have my other one that I lost 3rd and 4th in a few months back that I need to have gone through... ... (if I keep the '03)

It looks like it's the front pinion of the second (slave) shaft. All gears except 5th (direct) pass thru it. It will also mess up the input shaft pinion that meshes with it. When you lose it, you'll be left with only 5th, if you are lucky and it does not jam so badly that it busts the case and 3 bearings nearby. I would say that if you break it starting up a hill, then it may survive (leaving you with just fifth), but if it happens at high speed, probably gonna go with a BOOM... .

Looks replaceable without doing the whole shaft if you do it now.

I stand by my previous statements in other posts, that DC (and all diesel pickup truck makers) are gearing these vehicles wrong (and the auto trannys as well). They oughta be geared like 3. 00 final drive, so we can tow in direct, and only use OD for empty. That would be the only way to make 'em last as long as the engine, and maybe even a rebuilt Cummins, or two (2-3) million miles. Then they could offer a much longer drivetrain warranty. Most big rigs are geared with 1:1 top gear transmissions, and they even let the engine run a higher torque rating in top gear only, to be able to lug it uphill down to 1000 RPM in direct drive, before downshifting.

DOH! Forgot about them (B+G). I'm not a gearhead, but I've heard they have a very good reputation for, well, bearings and gears.

Talked to a guy at Midwest in Zumbrota. He said that the big gear on the countershaft is 6th and by my over-the-phone description that's what he came up with for this one. He agreed with most of you here, ticking time bomb.

$2375 for the rebuilt unit plus whatever the labor would be. For roughly $3000, I'll trade trucks first. I would really like to be able to make it until after Jan 1 for tax reasons.

I have come across a few good deals on reg cab 5. 9's. Staying away from the new emissions crap might get me talked into trading sooner rather than later.

Personally I can't see how you can trade trucks and come out saving money over just repairing the transmission unless you are somehow trying to figure in depreciation on the vehicle??

Even at that, depreciation is a loosing game in my books.

I can't trade trucks for $3000 but when you factor in the $4000 I've already spent this year and realize that with 174K on the odo there are a lot more things that could go wrong, trading a year ahead of schedule isn't a bad idea. However, when you figure that the extra fuel it takes to break in an engine is gonna cost me $1000-$1500 in lost mileage, suddenly a rebuild isn't too bad.

If you're wondering. . my truck is getting 2. 5mpg better now than it did when it was new, actually it's better now than it's ever been. That 2. 5mpg loss would cost me $250+ per month... assuming when a new truck is broken in it would get the same mileage as this one.

I can't decide if I should go get a rebuilt unit ASAP of just take my chances and trade next year after the 5500's have been out fro a while and get some of the bugs out.

The trans is making a lot of noise putzing around at idle, but a lot of that seems to be clutch noise and not trans.

So, basically $4300 for a 5600! Just keeps getting better as time goes on I guess!

I see a lot of rebuilt fuller fso-8406A (6 speed synchro, 0. 78 OD, 860 ft-lb, and 960 ft-lb in top 2 gears!) for about $3600. Same weight as NV5600, I don't know if it would bolt right up to the engine, or if it can be adapted to 4wd.

Total cost for me was under $3000 installed. The price online is list price and that's what they would normally sell one for. Maybe since I gave my company name they gave me a break.

just wondering... it is totally crazy to just get an NV4500 and wait for this one to blow? You can get NV4500's for like $1000 cash and carry...

Then again, I am not sure of the money to swap in, and difference in drive shaft lengths...
