Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Loose automatic shifter 2001 model - Shifter Bushings?

Maybe you folks know this problem well enough:



The automatic shifter for my 2001 2500 is feeling a bit loose. In particular it appears to be growing slop on 2nd gear. 1st gear is tight, but shifting to second it feels like the shifter is floating almost to 3rd.



I think the bushings must be going out. Is this common after 75K miles (i shift a lot to engine brake - steep hill living).

Check the 7/16 bolt that clamps the linkage to the shaft coming out of the transmission. That often works loose and will make the shifter sloppy.

I saw the actual shifter plate on the valve body for the first time on Sunday. If your linkage is okay, the ball and spring that gives the click, click feel, may have come out of its little hole, for lack of a better term.

Also, I have seen the linkage loose at the frame end- opposite of the trans. You may need someone to shift it while you watch. This one had the bolts rusted off.

By the way, I previoously posted that I had to repolace the VP. So I did and installed a Glasier system; SWEET! That thing is solid delivering 18 psi whithout any signs of dropping pressure even at full throttle. I might have to adjust it a bit and see if I can drop it down to 15-16 psi (by removing a shim from the fuel diverter).
