loose engine fan

I got a fax the other day from my local Dodge dealer about a whole big bunch of new 2003 trucks with the Cummins Turbo Diesel that came out of the factory with some aspect concerning the belt driven fan being loose. It didn't say too much about what is loose. If the fan is spun on opposite of engine rotation, then it will tighten as it runs, but if the bolts that hold the fan to the clutch or pulley to the hub are the culprit, OH MAMA! Anyway, all new truck owners should check theirs over. Warranty is a good thing, but prevention is better. A thrown fan could sail right through the hood and/or injure/maim/kill you or someone else.

750 trucks built in early August were involved. Not a lot when you consider how many are built. The hub nut between the fluid clutch and the drive pulley in the center is what was not torqued properly on some of these trucks. I suspect that the fan would only come off on engine shut down due to the left hand thread. The fix involves simply torquing that nut to spec (85 Ft. Lbs ?). Cheers,

The fan drive is now right hand thread a change from previous engines that were left hand thread. The trucks built with loose fans were specific to the month,day,and hour they were built.

Had my dealer sign-off on this recall the week before I received notification from Daimler-Chrysler in the mail. Those with affected VIN's should have received one by now. Recall #B28 was on my receipt and on the note.

I had mine done at Monroe Dodge in Washington State. The "technician" climbed into my engine compartment with an open end wrench and a hammer! I'm sure it was one of those adjustable torque hammers though...

Got it done this week. They had to alter the existing special tool by putting a hardened bolt on it. This let them put a torque wrench on it to check it. When they checked it they found the fan nut was tightened to spec at the factory in the first place. At least now I know. Cheers,
