The play is rotational right to left. When I was installing the borgeson, and the upper shaft was free from the lower shaft, with a pair of vice grips attached to the upper shaft just above the rag joint, i moved the shaft right to left, and you could feel the play. it was real obvious. I'd say there is about an 1/8 inch or better of play. A blogger from 1st gen told me he removed the whole upper steering assy, removed the collapsable mesh from the lower part of that assy. He then had to melt some factory plastic inside the assy, so that the lower shaft can slide out of the upper shaft. You then rotate that 180 degrees. You place the shafts back together, and that eliminates the play. You the have to weld back the collaspable mesh before reinstalling the assy. He did say that eliminates the steering assy ability to collapse in the event of a wreck.
