If you have this problem of loosing prime, indicated by a bad return hose, It might not be the hose. Before all that work and frustration CHECK the tightness of all the fittings that have to do with the return of the fuel to the tank.
My problem was a lose OVERFLOW valve. No leak and no smell of raw fuel, just enough looseness to cause the problem.
