I do not think it has any thing to do with ez or any box. as you have read lots of guys are having the same thing with "stock" trucks. as i am with mine . it is stock (for now) except for home made muffler eliminator and afe pro guard7.

when started especially with the cold temps out now it is a really rough lope, sounds like SS pulling tractors (big cams) when started in the mornings.

like i said very noticible in the colder weather. that is not my real concern, but if it is a problem with the lift then i want it fixed, but i have the lope whenever i am driving when first started. if i start up and warm up for a minute( not cold weather) then take off at slow pace just touching the throttle and trying to hold it steady it will start to buck and jump, just like you hit the gas peddle and let off then hit it and let off... etc it will do this for a very short time except now that it is cold it does it a little longer now.

thanks , sorry for the long post

Lope at Hi Idle

If some of you guys are referring to the somewhat erratic RPM and lope during the cold-weather "High Idle" feature, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to do that. It sounds whacky but it helps work the engine more than a steady RPM idle to help maintain cylinder temps better.

I think it sounds kinda cool. As soon as I touch the brake or throttle it's smooth as chocolate mousse pie :D

No this problem is a definate surge. This morning it was cold out and I had to take my 6 month old. So I went out and started the truck early. To help it warm up I did the old broomstick to the pedal trick. I had it set at around 1050 rpm. But it was real hard to set since the truck was surging to 1150 rpm and back. It was a real rythmic surge.

I also have the loud Freightliner sound. Every morning when it is cold out and sometimes during the day after the truck is at full operating temp.

I got the same information from my dealer as what Troll gave you. Being that I am hearing the exact same thing come from another source, I am more optimistic that this will fix it.

If you think about it it makes sense that trucks running Edge boxes are seeing the problem amplified. If it is a preasure difference then I would think that raising the rail preassure would amplify the problem.

Maybe we are on to something?

Here is my new take on the situ>

1. cold weather 25 degrees no pulggy in i get a real bad bad lope my uncle says "is that thing going to run away, she boy you git a piece of ***% dodge. ( His ford is next to mine idling with out a problem)

2. now if i plug it in all night no problem at all

3. i have the same problem when cold and taking off i get a bad bucking. if this was the engine doing this as designed like mentioned before it would quite once you take off. i dont buy that it is supposed to do this.

4. i think that the lift pump is having a hard time pumping the cold fuel or cool fuel

5 now every night i have to plug it in at the deer camp. how sad

6. i want i p pump on this thing

Just installed AFE drop in filter and cold idle "lope" has diminished considerably!

Will check again this morning.

Loping initially started upon installation of

edge ez.

mine surges so bad i just took the ez off, miss the power but it sounded so bad i was just tired of waiting for the next problem to hit. not sure if after six or so months the ecm didn;t figure out something is different and tried to correct it. i am now patiently waiting for either a tst box or banks. wich ever one can fill the order first. i hope the next generation of boxes are better.

Any new info on this?

A friends truck does the same thing, and he has only noticed it since it has been getting colder out. The truck is nearly impossible to drive. His truck is completely stock and has about 9,000 miles on the clock.

I sneaked some Power Service in his tank. We'll see if that works over the next couple days. I didnt tell him though. I'll just wait and ask him if it has been running better or not lately.

Sorry to ressurect this thread but my truck has developed this same surge. The cold start surges, I can deal with them. Ever since the day I bought the truck it has had a slight surge while cruising on the interstate at 70mph+, usually while using the cruise control. Now it lopes at idle and has even died a couple times because it won't return to normal idle speed when I push the clutch in (such as on and off-ramp). Keep in mind this is after a 40 mile drive to work so it's all warmed up.

Do we know for sure it's the injection pump (sensor?)? I can hear it now, I'm sure my only mod, an Edge EZ, is probably to "blame". I can't wait.

FWIW, mine is much worse when it's cold. It's been in the single digits for the better part of the last 2 weeks and unplugged it starts like a champ and it's very driveable within 30 seconds.

When it's warmed up it surges at idle once in a while. If I idle for more than a minute it seems to almost always start it's surging.

I'm really looking for an excuse for new injectors but I don't think this is it! :p

Andy

mine surges also when it is warming up. I think it is a normal occurance Look at what vaughn Makenzie said. I really believe that is how the high idle was designed to do when it is this cold out. It must be programmed to get the maximun heat in the cylinders. . When i drive away after the High idle my truck drives fine. For the guy that said he can barely drive it... what do you mean exactly?>

I wouldn't say it's normal, but it's common. I'd say about 30% of the 3G trucks exhibit this symptom at idle in colder weather. To date, I have no explanation as to why it does it, or why some do and some dont.

However, it does not affect the performance or reliability of the truck. I do believe Edge is looking into the cause, but because it's not a performance related issue, it's probably behind the timing/pulse box and a few other things.

Just a heads-up.

I replied a while back on this thread and at the time my buddy's 03 truck had just had the lift pump changed and it seemed to be OK. Well it turned out to be a sensor in the rail pump. DC says they can service the sensor but have not yet found a way to do this. The surge on this truck is dramatic jumping up to 1500 rpm in a surge then dropping back and almost stalling. Sorry for the lingo but I'm no mechanic. Hope this helps. :)

any updates on this issue...

Now with the cold weather, I am getting a pretty strong lope on the high-idle

And on very light throttle driving - It surges enough to notice

Engine lopes

I have the same lope on my 03 SO. It loped before I installed the Edge-EZ and it still does. Sounds like a funny car or top fuel car. Once the engine gets warmed up, it is better, but it never totally goes away. The lope doesn't show on the tach, but sitting in the truck, I can feel it moving with the lope and can see the air freshener moving the same way.

I guess if this was a 600 - 700 horse racing engine, the lope would be acceptable, however, it is kinda irritating on this truck. I haven't taken it back to the dealer expressly for this problem, but it has been in 4 times for service and it always comes back as no problems.

Maybe I will take it and leave it with them overnight to see what they say then.
