Beet juice, otherwise known as rim guard in the ag industry, is a great tire ballast. It is non corrosive and stays fluid below -35*F. It's also sticky as heck which is why it is being used on roads. Rock salt by itself when dumped out of the back of a truck bounces and scatters toward the ditch, making for a lot of waste AND is bad for the environment. Spraying beet juice prior to laying rock salt makes it stick much better and lessens the amount of salt used substantially.
The local ODOT outpost has been experimenting with both cheese and pickle brine as well with the exact same benefits as beet juice.
I'm just glad to see them start lessening their dependence on anything that ends in chloride!
