Being a rather new subscriber, I hope that I am not bring something that has been discussed before. It seems that lately, my '98 12v with approximately 40,000 miles shows a total lose of oil pressure when slowing to make a stop. I have checked and I'm not actually losing pressure in the engine. Has anyone else had a problem with the pressure sensor or the gauge itself. Seems like my friendly Dodge dealer wants about 180. 00 for a sender, which I think is rediculous and too much to just take a gamble on. Anyone else had this problem and what was the fix? Thanks for any help.

Check that all your electrical connections are good first. Some folks have reported problems with cheaper auto parts replacement senders, problem solved by paying the price for a OEM. You should be able to get a much better price on a sender from Cummins than the stealer. You will also need a special sender socket to replace the sender, available at most auto parts for under $10.

I have a 98 12V, and I have had the oil pressure gauge go to zero when coming to a stop. The bells start going off, and you wonder what is going on. This happens every now and then, but not often enough for me to worry about it. From what I know, the Cummins will shut down when the oil pressure in the engine gets low enough. I never checked to see if it is the gauge or the sender causing the problem. I just ignore it, and drive on. If it starts happening enough to get annoying, then I will start looking for a fix.

A 12v engine will only shut off after it has locked up. I don't think that a 12v has the electronics to shut off its self. If the guage is going to zero though, replace the sender with a good one. This will almost always fix it.

I had the exact same problem with the oil pressure dropping zero when stopping. It eventually got worse (scared the he$$ out of me) so I replaced the sending unit with a cheap after market unit and it is not exactly right but its getting the job done. In hind site I would have gone to Cummins for a better unit.

Hope this helps, Michael.
