Where to get boost fooler?

Hi all, I have been having some problems and I'm sure I can get some help here. . I've found that going to the dealer for a dose of frustration and then having to fix problems myself isn't working for me, go figure.

The problem started on my way to get the trans upgraded at DTT. I noticed that in high gear when I mashed the throttle the turbo would fluctuate, winding up and down while at full throttle. From my xmon the egt's were 1300 or so and the EGT limiter was set to 1450. The xmon was at 100% and did not show defueling. The EGT's are a little higher than usual and the truck doesn't have the power that I have grown used too?? Replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the air filter with no help. Put on a 5" exhaust because I kept blowing the back half off and the wife ran over it wrapping it around the axel? Still there. I am thinking pressure relief valve or injector. . I pulled the dip stick to check for diesel in oil but can't smell anything. I am running rotella T synthetic with Oil guard bypass.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Does it only happen in OD or certain speeds/rpms. Are there any codes? Also does it happen all the time or was it an isolated occurance?

I have only heard it in 3rd and 4th but the transmission changes so fast from 1st thru 3rd that I can't hear it or feel it. I do feel the power loss in all gears though and it is laggy.

No codes or check engine light.

Thanks,

Bill

Does anyone have a picture of where the pressure relief valve is? I can not find it in the service manual.

Thanks again,

Bill

could just be your waste gate opening and closeing.

when I stomp on it in 4th, 5th or 6th I'll spike at 35# then the pressure will go to 26# then back up to 30# and bounce around a bit untill I get out of it. Done this since I pulled her off the lot. doesnt bounce as much when I put the boost limit on with the TST.

BTW, the pressure relief valve is right next to the MAP sensor and infront of the rail pressure sensor.

I have had the truck for over a year now and this is the first time this has happened.

I run a BDDL on the performance setting all day every day and I think it does boost fooling because I use to hit 35 all the time and the turbo never acted like this. I definately need fuel guages other than the rail pressure on my outlook monitor.

Thanks for the input and the pressure relief valve info.

with my bully dog on performance i could hit 35 all day but it will drop down to about 28 then start to fluctuate as the wastegate opens. then when my clutch started slipping i experienced the problems you describe. as soon as i took it off performance and went to tow my clutch holds alittle better and it is drivable again.

During a Hard pull with the trailer. My Boost will bounce up and down from the mid 20's to 30's untill I back out of it a few hundred RPM's. Don't feel anything through the "BUTT Dyno" either. Temps are Ok... I'm assuming the Waste-Gate's doing what it's supposed to do.

Please explain why you say that.....

oh it's not just bully dog, but it seems to be PPE also.

take a tally of how many ECM's have been rendered useless after the BDDL especially have been used, i know of several.

Are you saying that the ecm is cooked? I put the stock program back in last night disconnected the pos on both batteries waited 15 minutes and drove it around till it warmed up and mashed the throttle with the same problem. Seems like there is more ticking noise coming from the engine compartment? I then re-loaded the performance program which added some power but not like before. I am interested in capping the rail but would like some instruction on the least invasive way of doing this as I may like to hook it back up.

yes im sure your problem lies in the ecm, possible a fuel problem

it sounds like the relief valve has taken a dump. try this first take the bolt out of the top of it and start the truck if it leaks its bad. replaced that or cap the rail you should be back to normal. it popping like it is makes it fuel related.

If you decide to cap the rail...

all you have to do is get an 1/8" pipe tap and plug and thread the inside of the banjo bolt and put the plug in. It takes all of 5 minutes.

Alot cheaper.

Is there any down side to plugging the relief valve?

if your peddle happy then yes, the more sharp you are with gettin in and out of the throttle, the more chance you stand spiking the rail pressure to high and busting injectors... ..... but if had mine on for a good while Oo.

Capped the rail last night per Reb. B instructions(thanks Reb. B at Brown's diesel)took all of ten minutes and I was down the road testing. Still have the problem. I watched the pressure this time the entire time I had the hammer down and never saw anything past 25K on the rail? I am pretty sure I've seen 28K there before. I was flogging it pretty hard but hits 25k for a second and then back to 20K or so. Does this seem right?

Thanks,

Bill
