I was driving down the highway and went to shift from 4th to 5th. Well when I let out the clutch there was a loud pop and the truck jolted big time. I can put it in 5th gear and it acts like it's in netural. The truck has no movement at all in 5th. Did they still have the 5th gear nut problem in '02? Any help would be appreciated. I think I'm going to go ahead and do a Southbend while I have the transmission out. Thats the bright side of it! Help! Thanks guys.

Either the nut came loose your you stripped the teeth out of it. Your options are buy the updated nut and risk having it come loose again or buy a fully splined shaft and do it right. If you buy a rebuild from Standard Trans or Quad 4x4 it will already have the fully splined shaft in it.

Well, I'm getting the fully splined shaft put in it and while I have the transmission out I ordered a OFE 13" Southbend to put in her. It gave me an exucse to do the clutch! I don't think the trannys are any different to pull than the 12v so It shouldn't be to hard, maybe an hour and a half. Thanks for the input. You're right Jared, watch out then cuz I'll be able to hang with you in a rebuilt truck!

I had something like that happen before. My problem was the 5th gear syncro. Besides the nut, that is another weak spot. If it is the syncro, just pull the back housing off and then pull the clip off the bottom syncros and you can get to it very easily.

Well I got the transmission in the shop and they told me some bad news. First of all he said someone had already been in that trannsmision. Apparently the nut had come off before I had the truck that I never knew about. Secondly, the idiot that fixed it just threw an updated nut on in and that was it. Also he said I stripped the gear retainer out and that needs to be fixed also. Has anyone ever had any problems with the gear retainer? I'm just glad that it's being done right this time. I can't wait to get the CON FE in the truck! Thanks

Eric

He told me he took the back part of the transmission off because he saw some shavings, when he did that he said the retainer was stripped out. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks

Eric

Eric. . Does this mean no trany for tomorrow?? Wed. . No big deal... You're the one that needs the truck... Not bothering me any where it is...

Bryan

He said the transmission should be ready tomorrow. If not then then on Thursday. Is that still good for you? I just need the truck to drive home Thursday night or Friday morning. I also got the clutch today. Yeah!
