I lost my 5th gear nut the other day, 15 minutes into my trip. Lucky for me I was driving to Ft. Worth. Called and spoke with Joe D. at Standard Transmissions on the way up. He pulled a rebuilt off the shelf for me and had it waiting. When I arrived, he helped me load it up in my race car trailer. What service! I was even running a little late, so he had to stay open and wait on me.

My question is, what can I do to prevent this from happening in the future? The S. T. rebuilt has the fully splined 5th gear shaft, but is that enough? I'm not towing over 9,500 lbs. and I make sure to never lug the truck below 2,000 rpms in 5th while towing.

How much did the full rebuilt cost you??

Erik

p. s. not too much help but i think the nut is corrected on the fully splined version and not lugging helps

How many miles did you have on that NV4500 before the nuts came off? I don't tow with mine and am on my second NV4500. I got about 125,000 out of my first one until the second clutch I had in it was installed incorrectly by the tech and exploded on the freeway grinding gears and destroying my syncros. Never had any issues with the 5th gear nut, but I thought I would ask how much you tow and how many miles were on it until it came off.

Thanks, Joe

BTW, the fully splined main shaft was designed to eliminate the 5th gear nut problem. That transmission that was sold to you from Standard trans will be your last one you will ever have to buy for that truck and as far as I know it should be problem free for a loooooooong time. :D
