Well it finally happened that nasty nut fell off. and no 5th gear anymore, I guess will start serching old posts and dig out old issues of the tdr to see what to do next. If anyone out knows of a good transmission shop in the Coeur d Alene area or Spokane Washinton let me know. Luckily all the other gears worked great and was able to get to my destination and back home, just at a slower pace. If anyone knows some past threads I should look at or have some novel Ideas let me know.

Do the Standard Transmission shaft and gear fix. Once it goes bad, none of the nut fixes work. After you see the old shaft and gear, you'll see why. The gear wobbles and wears into the shaft. Craig

About a year ago I put a fully splined mainshaft and new upper 5th. I broke my upper and lower 5th a few months ago. Not a single tooth left on either gear. If you plan on letting a shop do the work for you it may not be a bad idea to buy the gears from Standard Trans then let the shop install them. Dodge wants around $725 for the lower gear (if I remember correctly). Standard is around $160. If your a do it yourselfer I would suggest buying a speedo gear in advance. They're plastic and pretty easy to break. It would probably be a good idea to replace both the upper and the lower at the same time. I think that was part of the problem with my breakage, I had only replaced the upper. I had a new upper 5th working with an old 200K mile lower 5th. The gears wear together.
