I put 500 miles on my truck this weekend and 95 miles from home going up a slight grade I lost 5th gear. It didn't make a sound, my RPMs just started slowly rising (had cruise on). I need some advice now. I know what the correct fix is but I can't afford that right now. What I need to know is what the latest or best nut is and if I should get the gear also to be on the safe side. The truck has 91,405 on it now. I got the truck at 67K about a year and a half ago and ever since I got it I have had a slight noise when in 5th gear so I knew my time was coming. :{ :{ :{ Thanks for any words of wisdom.

(edit)

I guess I will get the nut from Standard Transmission. Now I need to find the two tools needed for this job. I had a link to them but it no longer works since SPX/Miller changed their site. If anyone knows of a place online to order these tools let me know, until then I will keep searching. I do have the tool part numbers.

Update

Well I got the nut and the tools ordered today. After work I dug in and got it apart and found just what I expected to see. The nut had backed off and let the gear slide back. The gear has slight wear but still fits good so I will go back with the original gear since this is just a band aid until I can afford the right fix.

When mine went I also had to patch it up due to budget constraints. I used the newest fix LOL from DC and after torqueing it tight I used a blunt chisel and BIG hammer to drive the nut another 1/8th turn tighter and then used a big center punch and the BIG hammer and staked the nut flare to the shaft about 10 times. Another member pioneered this fix and I think was hotshotting with his truck and got a lot of miles out of it that way.
