Haven't been on a proper vacation in 7 years. Left this morning in the 96 and got just south of Branson on one of those good long hills and BANG fifth no worky no more. We limped on to Jasper ark to a friends house and here we sit.

What's my best course of action? Can I patch this in the driveway with hand tools or is there a shop in Jasper someone knows of? Are any of the fifth gear nut patches worth installing?

I've never been into one of these trannies yet so I have no fricking idea what it consists of. I am still mobile but driving 55 is damn near painful for me.

Anyone have a good line on a 4x4 5 spd? Mines been a little noisy in all the gears but I thought I had more time.

96 ex cab 5 spd 4x4.

Driving 55 is your worst case. You can go a long way in 4th, continue your trip, or return home with little chance of further damage. I did this a long time ago, from the Gulf coast to the hill country in some terrible weather.

Good luck

Good to know. I will need to fix once I'm home and I'll sleep better with a plan. Right now the plan is to have the cheapest vacation ever.

Do you have 4. 10 gears? There's been at least a couple members who didn't bother to fix their fifth gear after losing it and continued to drive for tens of thousands of miles. But I know they had the 3. 54 gears and most likely a GSK.

Yes I have the 4. 10s and a 4k gsk. About 2,900 rpm is 60mph. Thank god we are in the Arkansas hills. There hasn't been a spot for fifty miles to even think about fifth!

Thanks for the link surf, hopefully I have enough parts left in mine to utilize that repair.

At least we are having as good a time as you can in a dry county!

Hello

Had the same thing happen to me heading from Maine to NM; no fifth going down the road. Found and pulled into a Dodge dealer in Tenn, and they took me right in. Truck went up a hoist, mechanic disassembled the rear end of the NV4500, found the problem, nut backed off. Replaced nut, welded it on, re-assembled and away I went. This was three years ago, ans I'm waiting for another , bang, before I have the NV400 rebuilt.

PS; It took five hours to repair.

Good luck

JL

Got the reman unit from Blumenthals installed today after work. All I can say is :):):):)
If I had any idea it would shift this much better I would have done the swap before the trip. Ended up my old trans already had the upgraded 5th gear but I shelled the center splines out of the gear on the lower shaft. It was time for a rebuild!
