Lost fifth gear and know that I have seen much on this in the past. But when I searched under "fifth gear" I got nothing. Got a little bit under "5th gear" Where should I look? I would like to fix this myself if it is the nut. Need to replace clutch also. Guess I could kill two birds one stone.

Help?

Thanx in advance.

Deezul 1 just did that last week. Replaced his clutch and fixed his 5th gear. Look thru the posts, you will find one with his signature and you can e-mail him.

I don't know where there are I too have seen them. What do you need to know I just had mine open a short time ago. If your clutch isn't ready yet I would try to leave the transmission in I think there's enough room, actually I know there's enough room I did it to think of it.

You take the driveline out, the transfer case 6 bolts from the transmission then there are 6 or eight on the back cover of the transmission.

Make sure the oil is out  I tried it with some in.

The nut is right there on the shaft. From what I understand the nut backs off and the gear just slips off the spline and no other damage occurs, just no 5th. Replace with the $30 nut w/ set screws and your off again.

I think I saw some talk of fully splined shafts to replace, sounds expensive. Don't know if that was the shaft the meant by saying fully splined.

I just did mine (with lotsa help, thanks guys) . I also got the nut as tight as possible with a hefty air impact gun and then used a dull chisel and the BIG hammer and drove the nut around another 1/4 turn. I took a large center punch and a BIG hammer and staked the nut to the shaft about 8-10 times in addition to the new split type nut and locktite. Keep up the search for 5th gear nut info there is quite a bit in there including the fix I used and the guy that did that got another 200. 000 miles out of it.

Nate Skate:

One thing about the "nut" fix, I had fifth gear fixed 3 times. Once the thing backed off then the next time the nut " stripped "off the the shaft. The threads on the shaft were ok but the ones on the nut were gone. I assumed the steel from that was in the transmission. Dodge didn't think that was a problem. Then the transmission burned up a 196K.

The nut fix does not work.

compiled help?

Thought i saw a web page once that was built of compiled threads for particular problems. I wonder if there is anything like that for the fifth gear fix. Pics would be great. Probably asking too much.
