'98 12-valve 5-speed:

I had the diffusing lens on the little under-hood flood light off making some measurements of the bulb (still working) when I think I must have very briefly shorted between the end of the bulb and the little metal tilt switch in the light housing that switches on the light when the hood is raised. The light went out.

Then I noticed all the interior cab lights were out. Switch the ignition on and the radio does not work either. The engine starts and all other lights (dash, headlights, signals, power seat and windows, door locks, etc. ) seem to still be working. Just no interior lights, under hood light, or radio.

I've checked every fuse in the fuse block on the end of the dash (junction control block) and in the PDC at least twice (pulled and inspected with magnifying lens and flashlight. All are fine. Fuses 5 and 11 in the junction control block on the end of the dash seem to be the fuses for lights and radio, respectively, according to the big green service manual, and I've check them both at least 3 times. Even tried new fuses in their place. No luck.

Any ideas what might be wrong or what else to check?

Thanks,

-Jay

Sounds like the IOD fuse blew... it's in the little holder in the fuse block inside...

I had issues with a 95 too, turned out the last tech to look at it took a connecter under the dash and "hooked" it over a screw, which in turn grounded something...

Steved,

That was it! Thank you! It was the one fuse I couldn't check due to being in that little holder and I couldn't figure out how to get the fuse out in the dwindling light last night.

I'd sort of ruled it out since I didn't know what IOD stood for (short for, "It's this One, iDiot!"). But I'd begun to suspect it after spending some more time pouring over the wiring diagrams in the manual this morning. Sure results in odd outages when blown.

Thanks again,

-Jay

Where exactly is this fuse. I have a simular problem but no diagrams or even an owners manual. thanks.

If you look at the fuse block, there is a single fuse in a yellow holder... that's the IOD fuse... the "holder" is pulled outward to remove the fuse.

At least that's how I remember my 99...

Hey fellas I pulled that IOD fuse it was good changed it anyways. The only thing i dont seem to have is the interior lights and cruse set function. I know that the two are not related but WTF? I love the truck, I've only had it 2 mo. , can you have truck love this fast. I traded my 2006 toyota tacoma crew cab long bed for it. It did have interior lights... Oh and yes all the bulbs are in there. Do the door thingies go bad and act like x-mas tree bulbs one dies all die?

Interesting about the color of the holder for this fuse. On mine ('98), the IOD fuse is in a black holder and is on the end of the row towards the front of the truck.

There are 2 fuses in similar yellow holders but those appear to be for the airbags. They are at the other end of the row towards the rear of the truck.

FWIW,

Power Mirror Swap caused my IOD to blow. I installed the Cool Vue power heated tow mirrors. After reading that thread, all 18 pages of it I couldn't find anyone with my problem. apparently pinching the wiring and causing a short during install is common, but most people blew the heater/cooling fan fuse when they turned on the defrost.

This link helped me find the IOD.

Thanks guys.

changed out the fuse, radio and cab lights work. I tried adjusting one of the mirrors and the lights dimmed. I stopped and decided I better tear apart the doors again and check wires before I blow any more fuses. that will have to wait for the light of day tomorrow.
