The other day I was out playing in the mountains in the 99. When coming down a really steep grade about 100 ft long my oil press went to ZERO:eek: I could not stop or shut the truck off (or I would have no brakes) so i kept going until I got to the bottom. When the truck leveled out oil press came back but was a little low. I got out and saw oil on the ground on the hill behind me. eased it back to the house and checked oil, about a gallon low. put oil in it and have had no problems. apparently it came out of the blow by tube:confused: what would cause this? any help or fixes would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

I have read of this happening before on really steep hills, don't know the cure! Might want to back down the hill next time. just kidding. :D :D

Your oil-pressure was ZERO because you sloshed all the oil out of the pan up and away from the oil sump/pick-up tube. You might be lucky if no undue stress was put on the engine, but likely did cause some premature wearing on your main and rod bearings.

I remember reading somewhere that the maximum permissable grade our trucks were designed to handle was rather shallow, something on the order of 17 degrees. (that's a 18% grade)

You are right hammong, at 17-18 degrees the oil level at the front of the engine is high enough to start coming out of the draft tube.

The grade was alot steeper than 18 degrees. well guess I will have to be carefull where I play(BUMMER).

Thanks!

for the info. i was wondering if there was way to stop that, now i know. all it takes is MONEY:rolleyes: about how much do these kits cost?

dsmith1 looks like a cool system for oil vapor! and the mess that goes along with it !! wonder if these systems they will solve the condition MMclain was wanting to fix (the crankcase oil pouring on the ground on steep grades), looks like both of the systems are just for the crankcase vapors ?? maybe some one makes a windage tray for the crank that should? keep the oil in the oil pan depending on how it is designed I had one on the 428CJ i had in my 69 f250 4x4. Dont think a windage tray is ment to work for oil slosh due to steep angles or grades what ever ya call it, more for pulling the rotating oil out of the cranks area !anyway the one on my 428 fit between the engine block and the oil pan .

or maybe a oil pan baffle kit of some kind to keep the oil in the sump area so the pick up could keep the engine happy:)

sorry so long !!

what do ya think ??

Guy

Thats a good point GBerry - the windage must be terrible in the front of the engine on a steep downgrade - I wonder if anyone has tried to dry sump a diesel before???

On the http://www.walkerairsep.com/ is the one I have heard the most about but on my other post I could not remember the name. If you look at that sight it says no oil or oil vapor will escape this system. I believe there was a thread on going with the cost and benefits of this. If there is not enough information there I may fire off an email for cost and more information to Walker.

lost big oil

Hi guys, I searched for this thread for this subject.

I did what the starter of this did also but only lost 2 quarts

I found that the oil pickup is at the back rt. rear corner of the oil pan so the limit of the steep angle even if not loosing oil is more limited than like jeep or something.

That unit with the collector and the yellow top is interresting but it still don't solve the problem of tipping and draining. I think we need to block off the front oil tube and do another vent up by the valve cover at the rear somewhere and then use a closed system like the airsep. If the vent were up by the valve cover like every other engine made, then that might solve the problem.

what do you think?
