Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) KDP Clarification

 '99 3500 4x4 sport hard loaded

My compass went haywire and had to be recalibrated. Ever since that was done the compass reading is correct but also reads in degrees - but I have no temp reading at all.

The temp sensor is likely located under the hood and points toward the hood latch as it exits from under the hood blanket/insulation. Earlier 12v's had them mounted on the innercooler on the DS at approx. the top of the bumper fasia and could be spotted quickly when the grill was out of the way (hood up).

Ck. the connector, clean and regrease. Maybe the module "board" in the module in the overhead console is on the fritz. Is it still under warranty?

You will likely need the DRBII or III to "recalibrate" other than the instructions in the Owners or FSM.

Often with electrical gremlins it is handy to know what happened last before the problem occurred (sounds like recalibration)?

Good luck

If the '99 is the same as the '01 the compass degree display is selectable. However, going to the next 'step' will reset this degree display. So will turning the the key off. It will revert to heading and temperature. This is probably a failure in the computer. I would expect a sensor failure to cause the upper or lower limit to be displayed. I believe those numbers are -40 degrees or 130 degrees.

I'm with WestTN, compass degrees is selected by holding UNITS button in for several seconds to get into that mode. Maybe the button is stuck after the calibration you did? When you first turn on the key, does the temp display and then go to compass degrees? If it does I'd vote stuck button.

If not, whacked out electronics.

Try this: Hold both buttons in then turn on the key. It will go into self-diag mode and maybe tell you if its brain hurts. If it tell you that, well you know what to do then.

Appreciate peply. Did not know where to begin looking for sensor - thanks. will probably start with sensor and connections then go on from there.

Thanks to all. Will try the key thing as well as the buttons. Thought I tried every combo with the buttons. Maybe holding them longer is the key.

The outside Temp sensor is located under the hood twards the latch just behind the grille. My temp sensor was stuck at 7 degrees for a week then one day I got some alcohol and cleaned it off (I am sure this is just a freak chance) and bingo when I started the truck it sprang back to LIVE life.
