Check your fuel cam plate.

Unless you have a lot of confidence in the shop managers word, I'd check the plate, make sure it's not a stocker now. I think it's very possible that the tech that went through your pump returned it to stock specs.

Many professional shops are aware of possible EPA fines ( that can get very expensive) if they alter stock settings on anything that could effect emissions.

Of course, this is just a guess, you'd think they'd work with what was their. But since you'r not making any smoke or seeing elevated egt's, that tells me it's a fueling issue, not a boost problem.

Good luck, Ronnie

Mr Dee, I'll bet they put a stock plate back in. I just had a loacal guy come to me with a loss of power. They shop had put the anti-tampering screw back and and when we got it out it had a bosch plate back in it not the #5 I had put in for him two years earlier.

No smoke sound EPA to me... .

Check the AFC diaphram, unhook waste gate line and try to pull a vacum with a Mighty Vac or something like it. I had one go bad and it had power loss.

Does your truck run the same as it did before you started the repairs, or is it different but still low on power? From the way you describe the problem it sounds like the truck is back to the stock configuration. Do you know anybody that would pull your plate out in the middle of the night as a joke?

The rebuild on the injector pump did make the truck more driveable. I have more RPMs to work with now, apparently springs get week and you lose RPM? Anyway, it's more drivable but that awesome power of the TST torque plate is gone.

Well guys, I'm right in the middle of checking everything out, so far this is what I've found: The AFC diaphram is good I pulled 15" of vacuum and it holds fine. The #6 TST plate is still in and it's all the way forward. I'm going to try and adjust the govenor because it looks like it's hitting to far down the cam plate. Any other ideas while it's apart? It's about 4pm Saturday and I'll leave it apart for a while. Thanks, Danny

Danny

When you do the adjustment on the arm just remember nose to nose and not above it. I guess you got the adjsutment info from Piers's site. It's 6PM central time here and we'll check back soon.

I went a head and put it all back together and went for a test drive. It really is fast now, but it's probably because I blocked off the vacuum to the waste gate, now I get 30 pounds instead of the 23 or 24 I used to get. Even last year when I installed the TST kit I only got 23 or 24, I think it's my altitude that makes it lower (5000 to 10,000 feet). The govenor adjustment was pretty easy although it was really low. It took about 5 complete turns to raise it enough to get it nose to nose. I guess I need to hook up the trailer and head into the mountains to really tell if I've accomplished anything. All I can think now if it's still low on power is that maybe the fuel is restricted at the fuel pickup in the tank or somewhere up to the engine. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Danny

I just wanted to check on you and it sounds like you have it figured out now, If your arm was 5 turns out of adjustment then it was way out, when I first did mine I really didn't read the instructions and went the wrong way with it and ended up with 25lbs and 850 EGT(crying for fuel). There is nothing like learning from mistakes, if do pull with it post back and tell us what the boost and EGT's were like cause we can all learn from it.

Jim

I hooked up the trailer today and I still have low power, MAX EGT's are still 1100 pre turbo, zero smoke. With the waste gate inoperative, it does run better down low, but there just isn't any fuel to go with the boost. All I can think is the fuel pickup in the tank must be plugged, is that possible? The lines look good under the truck, no leaks or kinks.

You really need to check fuel pressure yourself. If it is good you can eliminate everything from the lift pump back. The only thing I can think of other than low fuel pressure is slipped timing. With no ignition fuel is the heart of the tune up. TST has a fitting for $25 that screws into the bleeder valve on top of the fuel filter and is a good place to hook up a pressure gauge. I use a electric type oil pressure gauge on mine because it was laying around and it works fine.

Good Luck

John

Cummins RM owes me, so I'm going to hit them up for the fuel pressure check. I asked them to do it before they rebuilt the injection pump, but I don't have any paperwork that says they did it.

Tell them you want to the pressures in writing or watch them do it. You will need to know idle pressure and hiway speed pressure. When my 96 had this trouble it was ok un loaded but wouldnt pull my trailer over about 60mph unless full throttle. The hiway fuel pressure was about 7lbs and it was the overflow valve. If you have gauge on it and the pressure is low you can pinch closed the return line and watch the gauge and if it comes up it is the overflow valve.

John

I just talked with Mike Kerry at Cummins RM and he's agreed to checking out my fuel pressure tomorrow. He thought it would be almost impossible to block the pickup in the fuel tank but he did mention my injectors might be clogged, is that possible? Just when I thought I had it narrowed down!
