Hello all

1998 auto lost power on hiway, blow smoke, started to knock, then quit.

Coasted to stop, started back up fine after a few minutes, but knock is still there, blowing smoke from vent tube, some engine shake.

Ideas? Havent pushed it hard to check for power loss, concerned about knock and smoke, but runs. Oil pressure ok.

Thanks all

Eric did you trade in your truck or is this someone elses?

If it has lots of blow by that is compression getting past the rings.

This is someone elses truck. My guess was a piston/ring problem too for smoke out the crank vent, but dont know yet. Happened today.

We still have the 96, got the guage pod and pyro/boost guages in, truck is going to get timing checked/set soon as I have time, getting an appointment with DPoU. #11 going in yet!:)

Dee would you recommend DPoU for engine work?

Thanks

Eric

OUCH!

That does not sound good.

When it's idling pull the oil fill cap and watch the smoke. Is it puffing or steady? Puffing is a sign of a major problem with one cylinder / piston assembly.

If steady, check the turbo out to make sure air or exhaust is not passing to the drain tube pressurizing the crankcase. Possible but not likely.

You did say smoke, but stick your finger up the blow by tube to make sure no water is present, indicating head gasket, or cracked what ever.

Most likely, the head will have to come off to diagnose. Even a hung valve will not pass much blow by to the crankcase.

Good luck, and let us know what is found.

Would not recommend driving it if there is also a knock and the blow by is puffing, not steady.

It is over 100k miles so I meant Ken at Diesel Performance of Utah. Will know more today hopefully:confused:

It seems to blow as much at idle as when driving (drove home). Would the turbo have enough pressure to blow out the vent at idle?

Ken Jones Is a great guy and we're lucky to have him locally. He would be agreat choice.

Eric I don't know if you know Larry Aoki, he shoots with us and lives in Tremonton also. He lost his injection pump on his 24 valve and ken had him back on the road in a day. Ken just dropped what he was doing and got him fixed up.

Man that #11 plate is going to be rusty if you don't get it in the pump so the oil can take care of it. LOL:D

Eric

Take a look at my post from last week:

" Help !!! #5 & #6 Cylinders Toasted".

That's how I got started. . Turned out to be a headgasket problem, but before it was diagnosed correctly, I had replaced the oil cooler ($700) and collapsed #5 and #6. I'm in the middle of a rebuild now, and on the phone with Joe Donnelly almost daily. .

Check your radiator cap and overflow bottle for signs of oil or sludge. I never did show a loss of oil pressure, coolant, high temps, or water in the oil/ or pan. I did have vapor & sludge drip from the tube however, and thought it was from winter condensation. Wrong!!!!!

Hope it helps, pm me if you like.
